Seymour Duncan Full Shred - adding a cover?

Hi!

So, I've been thinking about adding a nickel/chrome/gold cover on my SD FullShred pickup.

Is this doable, and what do i need to have in mind when doing so?
can i screw out the pole pieces to sit flush with the cover? andapproximately how much does this add to the size of the pickup? so i know before i add a cover and notice it doesn't fit :eyecrazy:

oh, and how do i measure my pickup to know what measurements i need for the cover, the holes etc?

sorry for the lot of questions, but i like being right on instead of writing an essay about things.

You want to screw out the pole pieces completely? I mean, no pole pieces at all?

thanks, no i want the pole pieces on the side where the cover has holes to "line up" so they stick out a bit, instead of making 6 little holes. hard to explain, but can you unscrew the coils to go closer to the pickups?

I heard people are swapping pole screws so I can not imagine why they can not be unscrewed.

i would prefer a cover with holes, the chrome/gold would contrast the black polepieces in a good way i think.

now to find a matching cover. Thanks yet again guys :)

What would happen if you were to unscrew the pole pieces. Wax the cover and put on the pup and then put the pole pieces on the cover? Would this work? anyone tried similar thing before?

If the polepieces aren't in contact with the magnet, you wind up with little magnetic field reaching the strings. That leads to a pickup with little to no output volume.

I'm in the same boat as I want to put covers on my APH-1 and Custom 8, mainly because you can't buy the custom 8 (well stock I mean) and I like the sound of it.

Nobody has mentioned how badly it will squeal unless it is wax dipped. Someone please mention that, I'm sure we are all interested. In my experience adding a cover by simply slipping it over the top and soldering the bottom plate to the cover edges *MAY* lead to unpleasant squealing when you gain up.

I had a Gibson Les Paul and the 498T started to squeal on it. Yes they are wax potted but that can wear off. I got the pickup re-dipped at a very reputable (no not sarcasm) guitar boutique seller/repairer called "Real Guitars" here in Melbourne. Anyway it came back and omg it still squealed. Not quite as bad as before? perhaps? especially since I paid money I hoped it was a bit better.

But really since I'd owned the guitar since brand new I knew it just wasn't right.

I took out the pickup, held it upside down by its little leggy bits, and ran a cigarette lighter over the cover. Very quickly some melted wax emerged from the screw holes so I ceased flame and let it cool. When I put it back in the guitar it was completely squeal free.

So there you go, I would be considering weather or not it might squeal.

um... i think you want to make a full shred look like a PAF but with gold screws?
you would need to get the right size cover, depending on if you have the regular-sized (SH) or wide-spaced (TB) pickup, and swap out 1 coil's poles with gold fillister screws

it's do-able

I put a cover on a Detonator (like an Invader), I made a template from the opposite side of the cover and drilled the holes, pretty simple. So if you're carefull you could have both rows exposed. If you just want one row exposed you could just run the hexs all the way down flush with the bobbin, put a piece of tape over them, then slap the cover on, that will eliminate 99% of squeal from the cover. I would solder the cover on, you'll need to rough up the baseplate a little for the solder to stick, and you'll need a good soldering iron, a 5w or 15w will not do it without burning up the pickup.

I just noticed this thread, I'm awaiting a Full Shred (SH-10) from Darthphineas and have a spare SH sized cover I would like to put on it. I never even knew you could get these with covers until I saw this:

I'm hoping adding a cover to one of these is just like adding a cover to a regular pickup with screw poles.

It is. I put some gold covers on a pair of Full Shreds a couple of weeks ago.

It will work fine, you'll need an allen wrench to adjust the screws, but that's it.

what's the rule of thumb on adjusting pole pieces when installing a nickel cover? SD says the official SD covers are pretty transparent. is there a need to adjust the pole pieces at all, or is it just a cosmetic thing?

What do you mean, exactly?

When installing the covers I just move the poles out so they will fit in the cover holes, and hold it in place. Once it's all soldered in you can adjust the poles as you would in any other case.
Is that what you mean?

My worry with the Full Shred was that the hex poles were bigger than normal screw poles, so might not fit in the cover's holes.

The hexes are the same diameter as a normal screw, just run the side that will be under the cover down flush with the top of the bobbin and stick a piece of masking tape over it so there's no metal to metal contact between the poles and the cover.

I guess I mean that if the screw pole pieces are moved upward to fill the space in the holes, the slug poles still stay in place and be further from the strings. without the cover, the screw pole pieces are down lower and the slug poles are closer to the strings as a result of the overall pup height adjustment.
