WHAT !!! NO A2P in the poll ??? Confused !!!

Dear confused, as a proud owner of many Duncan PU's, I can safely say that I have yet to find a PU with an A2 magnet that I like, let alone that would qualify as "versatile." I can't get them to work in one guitar. A2 magnets bring with them some inherent qualities that are less than desiarble, in some woods they work out fine, but in other woods they're not going to sound very good (loose low end, overly rounded top, low output, and fizzy distortion). A2 magnet PU's can work great in some situations, but they're not as widely adaptable as a good PU with an A5.

The JB shouldn't even be in any poll that's looking for versatility, as it one one of the most finicky PU's there is. One of it's big fans on this forum called it "atrocious" in some guitars. It's just too specialized, as are the Custom & Distortion. I have a few C5's, and like them a lot; while they have their virtues, they're just too high output to work in some applications. I don't think any high output PU will meet any resonable standards for being flexible across the board. You can easily push a PAF into hard rock & get great tones, but high output PU's don't always work as good for softer things.

The Duncan that I've found to be the most versatile is the '59. A very good PU, though not always the best, it works well in many guitars and woods, and for many styles of music. Great clean or with overdrive. PAF's set the standard 50 years ago, and while other PU's can do certain things better, none can do so many as well. That's the definition of versatility.

Howdy,

If it's a HBer, make mine a SD '59. Sounds great in my Norlin-era ES-335.

Re: Seymour Duncan most versatile Hb

Custom 5. It can go where a '59 can go if need be by rolling back the controls, But you can't get the command and authority of a C5 foom a '59, so thats versatility.

Re: Seymour Duncan most versatile Hb

Versatile as in "many kinds of music" or "in all kinds of guitars"?

When it comes to come out good in all kinds of guitars, nothing beats the AHP1b and JazzN combo.

Re: Seymour Duncan most versatile Hb

'59

sooo versatile, you can do pretty much anything

wire em up with taps & it makes it hard to justify another guitar for awhile

Re: Seymour Duncan most versatile Hb

High output SH-5 Duncan Custom
Vintage output SH-1 '59 humbucker

Re: Seymour Duncan most versatile Hb

PAF lovers unite! We have nothing to lose but suboptimal tone!

That said, I adore my CC. lol

Re: Seymour Duncan most versatile Hb

I'm also gonna jump in on the A2P train and say that the CC is in no way as versatile as the A2P, which should replace it on the list. 59 would probably get my vote, along with the A2P.

Re: Seymour Duncan most versatile Hb

Alas, neither the CC nor the A2P are on the list. Both should be, though!

I'm probably being thrown by how it always sounds like Slash, but I'm not sure how ultra versatile the A2P is. Its mids sound like a supermodel looks: carefully poised, combed, unmoving, perfectly regular. Like marble pillars. It's not a bad sound, though, and probably quite versatile; but it does nothing good for me at all. (I prefer the tonal response of a CC; it changes character as you dig in. Yay, greasy 70s LP tones!)

Anyway, I probably just need to sample the A2P more; can anybody point me to somebody who isn't Slash, who uses it?

Re: Seymour Duncan most versatile Hb

59!!!!!! Personally. I like the Jazz bridge a bit more for super versatile but, out of the poll options, the 59 is the best choice.

'59 hands down;)

Re: Seymour Duncan most versatile Hb

Well been through the most of them.....and I would still stuff in a JB...parallel and seriel switch too....the 59 is out of the house...like the rest of them...
But it really just depends on how religios you are about pickups:)
