Seymour Duncan Pickups Suck Period

Re: Seymour Duncan Pickups Suck Period

What amp do you use?

Remeber, you can get a good pickup for less than $80 but a decent amp costs at least 10 times more than a pickup. Changing pickups wouldn't make a cheapo transistor amp sound like a holygrail tube amp.

How long have you been playig? If you haven't played long enough, you gonna sound terrible even with the best guitar/amp/pickups.

I hope this helps.

I would say if you haven't been playing long you're going to sound terrible ESPECIALLY with the best gear. Crappier tends not to pick up the nuances that better gear will.

Why are people getting so uptight?
You can't just preserve the free speech you agree with.
Not the best way to introduce oneself, granted, but the person has only made 1 post and not responded.
Sounds like a drive by trolling,or someone just wants to poke the dog with a stick for a few giggles.

I don't think anyone really got uptight, it's pretty obvious what this is. I was watching his public profile. He was watching the thread for about 15 minutes, and then signed off. It's a pretty weak attempt a trolling.

Re: Seymour Duncan Pickups Suck Period

pay att'n to the name "bzdup." If I ever see him in here trying to talk about something else I am gonna call him out and post his comment in that thread. Chances are though, we will never see him again.

This is not guitar.com or other sites were 14 year olds bash each other and everything. We help each other and keep an open mind. Joining a forum to bash is not what discussion forum were invented for.
Welcome to the forum anyway.

Let me guess ... school's out for summer and you have nothing to do?

Seriously, I do have a real question: if you think Seymour Duncan sucks, why did you buy so many of their pickups?
Exactly dude dont come to this forum and make one post and say i hate duncans..... why? why would do that? btw ur wrongcuz i have two of those pups and they sound completely different.

Re: Seymour Duncan Pickups Suck Period

not so hard on the noob guys.

this should be a freindly place where some one who uses duncans and likes them can say how great they are and those that dont like them can speak their peace as well without gettin jumped on. if the guys trying the pups and doesnt like them, im sure duncan would like to know why.
if he is using a crappy amp, maybe he doesnt know thats why his tone sucks. dont jump to conclusions so quickly. assume its on the up and up until there is reason not to.

Re: Seymour Duncan Pickups Suck Period

You know what, you suck! :laugh2:

I bought 3 and 3 came with a guitar I bought. I'm selling the 59s and the vintage rail online, and trading for dimarzios.

The Lil 59 is awesome. The duncan distortion is not modern sounding. It's just a 59, JB, whatever with a little more overall output.

All the pickups sound the same. PAF based sound, on steroids. The 59 humbucker and the 59 neck, just aren't anything special. In fact I believe the stockpickups that came with the guitar I got sound better.

Of course, a lot of this is my fault, I had high expectations from Seymour duncan. And please don't be a sad pathetic man and criticize my guitar, my gear, and my knowledge of guitar stuff. Most guitar players I know venture away from Seymour Duncan for the exact same reasons.

Don't believe me ask Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. Anyways, the people at SD are really cool, but some of you trollers are just goons. Yes, I started a negative post, but it's just to put some honest truth into this SD biased board. It's ridiculous. If anybody criticizes these pickups, their gear is criticized, their amp is criticized, and their ears are criticized!

Re: Seymour Duncan Pickups Suck Period

There is no such thing as a pickup, amp, guitar, or ear that sucks. They are all variables that change from person to person. No two people that have the same perception of what "perfect" tone is.

I personally agree with his generalization of most duncans being PAF's on steroids(the humbuckers that is), they are IMO meant for guitars with an already strong midrange presence and full sound to them. The average duncan has a mid scoop, more treble than bass, and has a description that compares them to a PAF in one way or another. They have their place, and for me it's in thick sounding guitars like les pauls. Of course there are the Parallel axis trembuckers which are meant for thin sounding guitars resulting from a tremolo bridge.

I don't know what kind of guitars you play, so that may be of assistance for us not to be terribly judgemental in response to you being terribly judgemental. What kind of guitars have you tried those duncans in? Also what kind of amp do you play, as there are a few amps on the market today that have a nasty habit of making all piclups sound similar.

There of course is the inevitable thought that maybe duncans just aren't for you, that's cool with us. Dimarzios sound great to me, but don't cut it in my mind when it comes to rythym playing, they are great lead pickups to my ears. I have no reason to criticize your choice in gear so you have no right to come into a pre-determined "Seymour Duncan" haven and foul mouth what are most likely the #1 pickup choice of most likely everyone here.

If you ever believed that Satriani would sound bad with Seymour Duncan, watch his Live in San Fransico. Then you should know what is the "honest truth" that you didn't know. To help you out, I have few questions for you.

What kind of amp do you use?

What kind of music do you play?

Re: Seymour Duncan Pickups Suck Period

You metioned Vai and Satriani---they play Dimarzios---if you want that sound you should too. I have Dimarzios in a couple of guitars and they sound great. Most people here have a lot of guitars with all different kinds of pickups. Duncan builds pickups for people that want that Duncan sound. No Drama----------------cheers!------JIMO....P.S. I just read where Satch IS using some Duncans----------see, you never know what you'll end up doing! :laugh2:

The guy has his opinion and thats fine. I think he could have been a little more forum friendly in his introduction here, but he was willing to stand up and be counted. I come here to look for both good and bad opinions, it helps me make informed decisions.

Re: Seymour Duncan Pickups Suck Period

Ok. A some points of clarification.

1. If you believe that SD pups are not for you, fine. If you want to make broad generalizations with no elaborations, keep them to yourself. Serious criticism is WELCOMED by Seymour & Co. Try that with most other companies.
2. If you are going to criticize, provide enough information for others to make decisions with. "SD pickups suck" provides NO useful information. If you want to help others make 'good' choices, then you must offer enough data for the choice to be made.
3. If you have found a pickup/gear combination that you believe will benefit others, share it.
4. I own 3 SD pups. They're pictured in my avatar. I also own a Parker Nitefly with Dimarzio designed s/c pups. I like them. My bass has stock ESP pups. I like them. My dad has a strat with Van Zandt pups. I like them. Try sharing similar information on other forums, and see how welcome it is.
5. SD allows open discussion of pickups in this room. Yes, it is frequented primarily by SD users. However, as my previous point reveals, it is NOT limited to them. Start a positive thread about another pickup manufacturer. It will not be deleted (unless someone starts bashing them). Again, try that elsewhere and see how long it lasts.
6. This place is the BEST forum in cyberspace. Mainly because of SD & Co., and it wouldn't exist if it weren't for SD. Go to the first post in this forum. Also, do a site-search for threads about UGD, or User's Group Day. Then tell me how wonderful the other companies are.

Certain pups work better with certain axes/rigs. Others don't work well at all. I tried a Duckbucker in LesStrat...I didn't like it at all. BUT, that doesn't mean that the pup sucked; rather, it didn't work well in LesStrat. OTO, the HR/CR/HR combination works well for me. IMHO.

Again, open, rational, reasonable discussion is welcomed here. Trolling is not. Decide which you are doing, and stay or go. It's your choice.

Hopefully, you will choose the former and begin posting useful information. You will be welcomed by all, even if you maintain your dislike for SD pups...but at least be reasonable in your discussion.

^ Succinctly put. It's not hard to play nice, even when your opinions differ.
