The SH6 does. the DMZ SD overall is more middy. The SH6 has a screaming lead tone to it.

I too find the DSD thicker sounding and the Duncan with more treble bite. Both great pups

Hello Ed,would the Dimarzio Super Distortion be closer to the VH1 sound then the Duncan Custom SH-5.I wasnt sure if the Dimarzio super Distortion was bright enough for VH1.

I havent played a Dimarzio Super Distortion since 1980,so I cant remember if it was bright enough for VH1.

The DiMarzio Super Distortion has a lower inductance and has a more clear treble and presence than the uber hot DD which has excited upper mids and highs as well as an amped up presence. It's really as far as you can go wind wise with a passive pickup and still have a good degree of clarity and definition.

The Super Distortion sound I always think of is Al DiMeola's Dual Sound (4 conductor SD) in his Elegant Gypsy and Casino albums... organic and almost vintage sounding with a real crisp presence without being overly amped up sounding. Just straight into a Marshall from his Les Paul.

The pickups are actually quite different despite both having ceramic magnets.

Duncan Distortion is definitely more clear. Super Distortion always struck me as grainy sounding and a bit muddy.

It's really as far as you can go wind wise with a passive pickup and still have a good degree of clarity and definition.

I'd say X2N gets that award.

I HIGHLY recommend the Dimarzio Super Dist for VH1. I havent posted it yet but I made a demo to show just that. The MightyMite humbucker in the b&w Frankenstein Boogie body superstrat ( THE guitar) was designed to clone the s
Super D. The ENERGY of the Super D is unique- the attack will be a smidge noisy in a good way, the lead tone (thru cranked tubes) gets chewy like Eddies. Its not super clean, but listen to VH1- lots of little noise chaos here & there. Also, if u look at Eddies right elbow live it never moves, so he picks rather economically so w the SuperD you can get alot of attitude just kissing the string lightly w the pick.
Some prefer the 78 model for VH1. I love mine cuz it purrs. If u listen VH1, sometimes the longheld chord rounds off the highs and gathers around a low-mid center in a good way: my SuperD does that. I have screwed very far from the strings.
I love DuncDist (its in the metal demo below)- its tight, violent chords w clean singing leads. The SuperD is different. It makes me want to hit a chord that rings out and growls , and the leads and harmonics are violent and *****in w out being shrill.

Some are saying that the Dimarzio Super distortion is muddy,I dont here any mud on VH1, so it is a concern to me if it is muddy.

Its thick but its not muddy.
