Is this for real? Anyone try this.......the videos I have watched always have someone accompanying the guitar player and so haven't really heard the clean sound. I've ordered hot pups from the Custom Shop and always with great results. Just wondering with the numbers associated with this new pickup how it must put out and the tone it must generate.

There they go again, associating DCR with output.

It will be interesting to see how time treats this pickup. Being advertised for stoner metal and doom metal may/will very well keep this model focused on a narrow market.

I think that DCR and the design indicate that this one could sound kinda different than normal. And that it probably is not a low output hb.

Are there any high dcr low output pickups? I know DCR is not output but I can't think of a high DCR low output pickup off the top of my head. I can think of the reverse.

The DiMarzio HS-3 is just shy of 24kΩ. High DC resistance means lots of thin wire.

Regardless of the DCR and wire thickness, with dual ceramic blade magnets it's still gotta be powerful. I don't think I could use it but I still wanna try one.

Interesting. I figured as much , but I realized I couldn't think of any.

I would also guess by the descriptions it is going to be very high output. Then again, I have ordered it, so, we shall see.

The most common illustration is the Steve Morse set from Dimarzio. Neck is 20k, bridge is 9k and the bridge is louder than the neck.

I have neither seen nor heard the Slug in person, but have to imagine its about as much 45AWG (same gauge as what's used in Dimarzio's Super 3 and HS-3/4) as will fit on those bobbins. You can always cut and stack two bobbins to make them taller. Too many variables to speculate; lots of resistance, presumably lots of distributed capacitance...Anyone interested is just going to have to buy one and find out for themselves.

Well, the Steve Morse model is a good example of a low dcr with high output I thought. So are alumatones, and some other models (Lollar Charlie Christians come to mind as well as filtertrons for dcr numbers lower than you might expect)

I just couldn't think of a high dcr low output.

And I actually have a slug on order. I was curious, and I liked the clips.

The YJM fury strat pickups are around 25.5k and they are actually only slightly hotter than a typical strat pickup.

I have a custom Slug 7 in the bridge of my Ibanez.
I have also recently ordered a custom Duncan '78 to be made for 7 string neck position to pair with the Slug 7 and it should be ready sometime this week according to MJ.
With this model Ibanez having only one knob both pups are on all the time so I needed to have a very articulate pup in the neck to make the notes tighter as I cannot blend the two pups with the knobs and control the output.
Slug has the tone of death metal.

I really wanna hear this thing.

Traditionally, almost all Stoner/Doom bands use very low out put (very vintage voiced) pick ups.
Only the one or two Lace endorsed guys (don't know if they actually record and gig with it) are using hotter units.

So, lets see how the traditional Stoner/Doom guys receive/interpret this unit.

Hell, even i am curious to test it . . .

DEATH Metal is sooo far removed from the more vintage approach of Stoner/Doom.

I'm not exactly sure. I haven't seen the marketing presentation. I saw the spec as blade ceramic and knew what it would sound like and that I would like it in the bridge position. I might try cobalt strings for extra dark or changing the cap and pot too. One step at a time.

Guys that play sludge doom with PAF's use the neck pickup almost exclusively, or they use fuzz. The alnico Warpig is probably my favorite bridge pickup for that type of thing, A8 Detonator is in there, but yeah, there's different ways of acheiving similar tones. Based on what I've seen and heard of the Slug I think it's safe to assume it's in the same sonic territory as the Warpig, which also works great for darker old school death metal sounds as well as thick & buttery sludge tones. The amps and settings used dictate what you'll get. Use a 5150 and you'll get DM, use a Model T or an OR and you'll get doom, get it?

I also had no idea what the deal is with the IM-1.

I will not be playing doom or stoner metal. I just don't, but it sounded really thick to me without having an attenuated high end.

Many Stack pickups have high DCR and low or moderate output. It's just the nature of the Stack design. And it also illustrates why DCR is not always a good indicator of how a pickup is going to sound. And why you should never compare DCR between pickups that use different designs like, for example, a Stack and a true single coil.
