SEYMOUR DUNCAN SLUG PICKUP

Re: SEYMOUR DUNCAN SLUG PICKUP

The descriptions on the custom shop's page leave much to be desired. After reading the description of the IM1 pickup I don't know what they're talking about?

Agreed. And in some cases, advertised specs are not accurate.

"Sounds like the monster who was shocked by lightning."

Frankenstein

IM1

I'm The One

It's a Van Halen pickup!

Re: SEYMOUR DUNCAN SLUG PICKUP

Many Stack pickups have high DCR and low or moderate output. It's just the nature of the Stack design. And it also illustrates why DCR is not always a good indicator of how a pickup is going to sound. And why you should never compare DCR between pickups that use different designs like, for example, a Stack and a true single coil.

Yeah, I had forgotten stacked single coils.
I am mostly a humbucker guy and in general I couldn't care less about DCR. But this one is far out of the norm in a few aspects, and I expect high output by all descriptions and specs.

Re: SEYMOUR DUNCAN SLUG PICKUP

Hoping to hear soon here or on YouTube without accompaniment or distortion (at least not at first). Seems from the response here that SD shouldn't have much trouble selling this pup. Can't wait for the first personal review!

Re: SEYMOUR DUNCAN SLUG PICKUP

I just got mine. Soldered it in my single pickup alder body guitar. Played with it a few minutes at fairly low volume. Unbelievably heavy sound, THICK, super hot sound. When I say that, I don't mean in a stereotypical hot sound sort of way. It is I believe by far the hottest pickup I have played. Very cool sound. It makes me want to play hardcore or metal. Tuned to standard it sounds like nothing I have played. Massive sound. Some people I have seen suggested it might sound like a BKP Warpig. I have an alnico Warpig. This sounds like what the warpig wishes it could sound like. This is a really massive sound. It is amazing. Very quiet pickup when not playing. Amazing, amazing pickup. The highs are there. It is not congested, though the pickup I would describe overall as having a dark character. The cleans sounded really nice, which threw me for a loop.

I just ordered a second.

I think the unique thing about this pickup is that the rails ARE magnets, rather than just steel rails. That might be easily overlooked.

The full or half rail designs most are the most familiar with (dimebucker/lawrence, dimarzio X2N, crunch lab, etc) are certainly aimed at being high(er) output pickups, but they don't use magnets as rails, they use magnetized metal rails...this one is using magnets.

You can always use a weak magnet and lots of winds or high resistance winding. That is one way that a lower output can be had with high windings.

These days, pickup designs run the full range of classic style to totally unorthodox approaches. Seems that on that account, DCR means less and less, because if all else were relatively equal, it would be a useful tool.
I like that seymour uses resonant peak frequency which I find a useful spec since I "know the frequencies" from doing lots of sound and lots of expirimentation with soundboard EQ, graphic EQ, and circuits.

I think that it would be helpful to the techie types to start publishing inductance as well as resonant peak, and to those few that don't post DCR, add that as well.

Dimarzio posts output in mv, but under a very specific setup...in general it does help compare one model in the Dimarzio line to another, though (I do find their EQ chart, resistance, write-up, and output comparisons between the paf joe / paf pro /fred /mo' joe very informative).

Re: SEYMOUR DUNCAN SLUG PICKUP

I was thinking of trying my old maroon bridge stack (20K) with a Lollar CC (3.6K) in the neck
The DCR might look wrong, but I think they'll match
A stacked CC would be cool if they could get it to work

Re: SEYMOUR DUNCAN SLUG PICKUP

Ok, now I know this has been seen.
My question is, what do you pair with it in the neck? An Alt 8? Black Winter? Another Slug?

Re: SEYMOUR DUNCAN SLUG PICKUP

Forget the DCR (Ive seen tame 20smthns from dmz, so why not?), bigger question is: WTF WHERE ARE THE SLUGS?!

Re: SEYMOUR DUNCAN SLUG PICKUP

Ive matched EMG 81 - in NECK! - with 7.92k in bridge, so DCR seems mighty vague indeed to me.

PS tho some dudes who broke an 81 claim its got two 3.81k coils...but supposedly in parallel. wonder if thats how it became known as an 81? Lol

Yeah, Black Winter, or the Custom Shop can do a SLUG neck version as well. Personally (did I say this somewhere else today? Brain is getting foggy on no sleep) I'm thinking of pairing one with a Screamin' Demon in the neck in my Les Paul.

Re: SEYMOUR DUNCAN SLUG PICKUP

Will the SLUG be available in white ?

I'm asking because . . .

. . . if it is :

Another slug in the neck might create so much magnetic pull that the strings will move about as easily as a vibrato bar.

Re: SEYMOUR DUNCAN SLUG PICKUP

I'd trust the Custom Shop to create a good pair of SLUGS. Definitely going to order my set very soon! What is likely the preferred body and neck wood, etc???

Re: SEYMOUR DUNCAN SLUG PICKUP

Anybody else try one out yet?

I'm wondering how it would hold up in a 27.78" baritone, tuned B-B, A-A, drop G, etc....tight enough on the low end or would it be too muddy?

(something like this or this)

Read the line right under the IM1 at the top of the page. If you know anything about guitar you'll understand what they're talking about immediately.
