Seymour Duncan SP90-2 hot soapbar Users....

Hey all....new kid in town :smokin:

I recently bought a Gibson Les Paul DeLuxe, Guitar of the Week.
Antique Goldtop with mini hums. LUV IT !!!

I'm going to swap out the minis for p90s. Being a big Mike Ness/Social Distortion fan, I naturally like his tone. I also play thru Bassman heads into
Marshall 4x12 cabs. My question is to anyone that uses these pups regarding the tone overall(clean and distorted) with ceramic magnets. I just replaced the stock ceramic magnet pups in my Gibson Firebird V with alnico minis and the difference was dramatic to my ears.
I guess I'm wondering if there is any "warmth" to the SP90-2s. The ceramic pups in my Firebird were too harsh for me. Do I want ceramic p90s ?

I did a search on this forum for these pups and read all the pertinent info.
Any input ?

Re: Seymour Duncan SP90-2 hot soapbar Users....

I've had a couple of guitars with Hot P90's in the neck and Custom P90's in the bridge. I think they sound great along the entire spectrum from clean to full on metal. Duncan's vintage P90's (which I've played in a few PRS CU22 Soapbar guitars) are perhaps better clean, but I don't think they sound nearly as good when you start piling on the gain. If you are after traditional-sounding P90's, you might want to stay away, but given they fact that you are after Social Distortion type tones, I think Hot P90 would be fine. Oh, and I found them plenty warm.

Hey austin....thnx for the input. The warmth factor is a big deal as I'm not
always "out there" so to speak. I don't do metal, but sometimes just shy
of it.

I've got a 3 P90 guitar that has V/V/H Duncan P90's. I was going to go with the Custom for the bridge but I'm glad I didn't. The Hot sounds great with distortion, I also chose these pickups based on Ness' use and you can definately get that modern Social sound. The clean IS a bit sterile and mid focused, but I switch to the middle or neck P90 for cleans. Also, I use this guitar for stoner/doom type rock/metal and it works great, both with the distortion channel on the Mesa amp as well as thorugh a Big Muff. (Drop D, muff + Hot P90 is a huge sound. :D)3

I think that combo should work out well for you, unless you use a lot of bridge cleans, in which case two vintages and a boost may be better.
