Seymour Duncan vs. Duncan Designed

Hey, I am wanting to put some new pickups in my Ibanez GAX70. I told my guitar teacher I was going to get a JB in the bridge and maybe a jazz in the neck and he said to go with a Duncan Designed for it instead and that they are hotter. I probably could get a Duncan Desigened now but if I went for the JB and jazz I would have to wait and save up some money for them. Mostly gonna play classic rock and some newer rock with it through a Hot Rod Deluxe. What ya think?

Duncan Designed is just a series, they're not hotter on a whole, there will be Duncan Designed pickups that are hotter than American Seymour Duncans and vice versa. I've played some guitars with Duncan Designed pickups, and I honestly thought they were just bad, muddy, lacking clarity, lacking character etc. I'd advise you get genuine American Seymour Duncans.

I agree with WasteofO2, It would be safer to get the real pickups, because they're better quality than the korean made Duncan Designed pickups.

The thing with the Designeds is they´re modeled after "original Duncans", but less consistent. SO while one may be a bit hotter than a JB, the next one may be a bit weaker.

IMO the Original Duncans sound better as well, but for 10 bucks off eBay the Designeds could be a great match for the Ibanez as well

the buck shot set is not bad at all
they have thier own sound even though they are modeled after the DD set

I'd go with seymour duncans, i know if i got duncan designs i would always be thinking, 'these are good, but i wonder how that JB/jazz combo would be sounding?'.

If you don't mind used, there are a ton of JB's on ebay for not a lot of cash.

I did not like my duncan dessign.

What do your teacher mean by hotter? High output is not necesaraly making the picup better.

you can buy brand new combo jb/jazz for $120 it's not to expensive for the quality sound you get

get the usa one.

the designed are bad attmpts top copy the real ones. just get the original ones.

I've played a few guitars with duncan designed on them and I wasn't too happy with the sound...

Not that I know all that much, but IMHO, it's not just Mr. Duncan's designs, but the quality of materials that he uses that make Duncans rock. I would seriously cry if he ever started to compromise his quality...

I have a Duncan Distortion and a Full Shred neck and this is a nice set to compliment this Ibanez Gax70 and it would work well for you too. You might prefer the jazz neck though.
