Hi there . . .

. . . this might sound like a silly qustion to all you Strat & SRV gurus/fans.

Is the Quarter Pound set too hot to get a decent SRV tone from a Strat and Hot Rod Deluxe ?

Asking because i am super new both SRV's tone, and to Strats.

Thanks to all.

IMHO SRV's tone is all in the swagger. Right-hand technique and huge calluses.

Any proper single coil, adjusted properly, with a decent amp will get you in the ballpark.

Don't forget a tubescreamer type OD pedal to get that mid heavy drive tone.

I think it could work. Just set the amp cleaner than you would with more vintage -y pickups. The QPs will hit the amp harder. You probably wouldn't have to thwap the strings that hard, either.

Re: Seymour Quarter Pound Strat Set (SSL-4) and SRV tone !?

id say no. srv's tone was wimpy pups in a strat tuned down a half step with big strings into big clean amps with a tubescreamer. a qp is a great pup but its not gonna sound like srv at all. at least to me. how close is close enough for you? if you are a hot bucker guy used to playing with a ton of gain, then a strat with qp's into a cleanish amp might work fine for ya

Re: Seymour Quarter Pound Strat Set (SSL-4) and SRV tone !?

I tend to agree with the guys advocating for cleaner pickups. When I was on my SRV kick, I had 11's on my MIJ 62RI and played half a step down into a BF Bassman head. I used Fender 57/62's and it worked pretty well for that sound as long as I beat the snot out of the guitar with my left AND right hand. A couple of tube screamers also help.

Most people think he used hot pickups because of the Texas Specials in the signature model. So many misconceptions about how he got his tone.

I asume a Maxon OD-9 will do the job too ?

Re: Seymour Quarter Pound Strat Set (SSL-4) and SRV tone !?

The QP is a really loud and hard single coil. It really doesn't sound much like a P90 and doesn't sound much like a traditional single coil either. It will do AC/DC and The Georgia Satellites all day but I don't think it's a great choice for SRV.

I’m 100% on board with Jeremy’s post. If you are used to Humbuckers and Gibsons, etc. a set of QPs might be close enough.

For SRV tones it's a no brainier. Antiquity Texas Hot set!!
Have a set in my Strat they KILL!!

Re: Seymour Quarter Pound Strat Set (SSL-4) and SRV tone !?

id suggest the surfers are closer to the srv tone than the texas hots regardless of name, although both are great sets of pups.

srv did have some of his amps modded but those mods were for more clean headroom and to better withstand being turned up and played hard night after night
