Seymour's response....

Question: Hello....I currently have a Basswood body, Maple neck/rosewood
fretboard Ibanez RG Prestige guitar with a Dimarzio Steve's Special in
the bridge. It is not sounding full enough for me. I was looking to
phatten up the sound, but still have clarity and bite....Like Eddie Van
Halen's tone on Fair Warning album.....Any suggestions? Thanks....

Answer: I suggest our Custom Custom for fat buttery crunch.

True or not?:eek13:

Re: Seymour's response....

Don't know if that's the best suggestion, but it's definitely a good one. It fits that description in strat-like guitars, but I've never heard one in a basswood body.

I'm also of the understanding that the CC is the standard response from SD if you ask about Van Halen tone. In many, if not most, cases this is the best suggestion, IMO.

Re: Seymour's response....

True or not would depend on your ears, I suppose.

You could always buy one and try it...if you don't like it, use the 21 day exchange policy.

If you looking for more suggestions:
How much output do you want/need?
What amp/effects are you using? The rest of your rig is important in pickup selection...of course finding a sound that you like is usually trial and error.

Re: Seymour's response....

I'd agree with the CC.

The Custom Custom is going to get you pretty close, but honestly any of the A2 based PAFs will get you close as well. The CC is going to have the extra push many people prefer.

If you don't mind spending the dough the custom shop makes a 78 model bucker that is very close. It's a great pup I've got 2, one in a PRS, and one in a LP... not to muddy the waters or anything! :D

BTW WELCOME TO THE FORUM!

Re: Seymour's response....

Well....I kinda narrowed it down to a few pickups:

The Virtual Hot PAF
The Genesis Mr. Browney
The 78 model EVH.

I use a bias modded 6505+. Here is a link to some clips....
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=309860

The Panama and Somebody Get me a doctor were my basswood RG with Steve's special in the bridge....Sounds a little thin to me....They are hotter output Dimarzios...My other Mahogony ibanez with Steves special sounds damn good. Listen to Still of the Night for that guitar sound.

Thanks for the introductions guys....glad to be part of the forum...:smokin:

I can't speak for the other models (quite a few guys here HAVE tried the Dmz Virtual Hot and can comment) but I can tell you about the 78.

It has a chewy, crunchy, aggressive sound. It also has a feel under your fingers that Lew describes as "familiar" and I agree. Both of mine are unpotted and are very complex sounding.

So far it's my favorite bridge pup, and I'm not a huge VH fan either! :chairfall

Re: Seymour's response....

The Steve's Special is a pretty unique pickup, the only others I've tried that sounded similar were the DiMarzio MegaDrive and the Jackson J-95C. They are all pretty wide-bandwidth high-fidelity pickups. Since most humbuckers have a strong midrange, these can sound thin in guitars that are themselves mid-deficient.

Re: Seymour's response....

The VHPaf Hot is a great pup also wound at around 9k although I think that it is a little more articulate than the Fair Warning tone (which isnt a bad thing). I'm not sure how it would sound in your axe, but in my strat it nails most of early VH and some V Hagar also. Probably the closest VH sounding PAF that you can buy off the shelf without going to a custom shop model.

Thanks Walt....I really want to hear a clip of it. I have heard a great clip of a Vrtual PAF, but not the Virtual Hot.

Re: Seymour's response....

The pickup that EVH used in his guitar for Fair Warning was a Duncan 59/custom hybrid. Do a search for them, you can make one yourself. SDUG forumite BachtoRock also makes them.

Me, I would trust what they say. I asked them for a good set for my ESP (agathis body, yuck) and they said Hot Rodded combo, and sure enough they were totally correct for what I needed.

Lew is also a good person to trust. He said dual classic stack plus and a JB for my Ibanez, and he was also correct.

Re: Seymour's response....

So, if Seymour says CC and it doesn't sound like VH, then does that mean you need a different guitar/amp?

I have one in a basswood body and I wasnt convinced it was even close to a EVH sound. This user asking the questions has a basswood body also.

Re: Seymour's response....

You'll have better luck getting the FW tone with a CC in a ash Strat or alder Strat, not basswood.

The answer they gave you is true though. You will have fat buttery crunch, just not EVH / Fair Warning sound in a basswood guitar.

I apologize for not taking that into consideration. I've never had a guitar made out of basswood, so I was definitely premature with that suggestion. Is there a pickup that will get that sound with basswood? I'm a little skeptical...

True. Its the go to pickup for any axe that needs to be fattened up.

Re: Seymour's response....

I think anytime you mention VH, and in particular the Fair Warning album, you are going to be recomended the CC. I have one in my Charvel Strat..does the tones you are looking for real well. Can also cover later VH, stuff like Judgement Day...in the bag.
