Just had a thought.

Most people's sigs. list pickups in matching pairs. When Seymour makes pickups are they intended to be sold as a pair?

I've only ever bought two pickups (CC and a Seth) and my decision was based entirely on the sound clips on the site. Am I quite unusual in buying a non-matching pair first?

Just as a side note, what was the first ever SD pickups that other forum users bought? And were they in pairs or did you mix and match?

they do have the matched sets now that sells 2 pickups together (JB&59, 2 DD's, cant remember the rest)

Hmm I think its good to have pickups that match output-wise... but how do you define matching sound-wise? I mean you could say a very clean one paired with another clean one, but I think it's cool to have some difference in one guitar...

The first "set" of pickups I believe really started when Seymour wound some special Humbuckers for Jeff Beck's famous Tele Gib. These pups became the JB and Jazz.

As for buying in sets, Seymour makes them, ex 59's, Seth's, PG's ect. I think those are a good starting point, but I think that probably more people mix and match....especially when they start really trying to dial in a partictular sound...ex great crunch or thickness from the bridge, and great clarity or warmth from the neck. I guess I've never really thought about it, and I don't pretend to know what Seymour was thinking. It seems that all of the PAF type pickups are "available" in matched sets, in an attempt to capture the flavor of original instruments, artist's sounds or other famous or sought after tones. Then you have select pups which seem to be bridge only models...the Custom Series, trembuckers, models named after Artists.

There is no right or wrong way to buy or use the pups...so you're not strange for not buying sets.

I started with a 59/C5, and then through trying various things, ended up with the 59 pair. Same with my Patriot. I've been through quite a few combo's, and will end up with a pair of Distortions. (The Mayhem set.)

Its just the way it ended up.
