SG 498T into Les Paul?

Hey guys and gals,

I'm buying a really well built high end Edward's les Paul guitar and I'm wanting to put a 498T bridge pickup in it. I have a question though, if the pickup is out of a Gibson SG, will it give it a different sound compared to buying a 498T pickup out of a Gibson les Paul? Like is the guitar shape and stuff the only thing that makes the 498T pickup sound different in the 2 guitars or is the actual pickup made differently?

Cheers,
Kyle.

The pickup doesn't change. The guitar's influence does. For example.....the same pickup in an SG and a LP will likely not be made to sound identical. Construction differences are nigh on impossible to overcome unless your tone is so smothered with gain it becomes totally amp sound.

The 498T in an SG is the same as a 498T in a Les Paul. Same winds and magnets, within acceptable tolerances.

Edit: I should have clarified what I meant. The SG and L.P. won't sound the same, but if you take the 498Ts out of both of them the two pickups will sound almost identical in the Edwards that you are putting them in.

SG's thin mahogany bodies give a lot of midrange to the final sound. LP's mix of thick mahogany & a maple cap give a wider EQ, with more low and high end. Put the same PU in the bright, hard wood of a Strat and it'll sound very different too.

There have been members here than have tried the same PU in similar guitars or even the same model of guitar, and had them all sound different. Wood's organic, no two pieces are the same because of natural variances grain, moisture content, mineral content, knots, etc. Even from the same tree, the pieces won't be the same. Look at how the width of rings can vary year to year depending on rainfall (or the lack of it) and temps.

I think the 498t sits better in an SG tone-wise because of the SG's natural mids. A Les Paul emphasizes the bass and treble and can make the 498t sound more harsh.... unless that is what you are after.

Re: SG 498T into Les Paul?

I've never been happy with a 498T in a Les Paul, but in an SG or a mahogany slab LP Special it sounds great to me.

Re: SG 498T into Les Paul?

I'm ok with stock Gibson pickups, but it demands the best amplification to sound good and play well. If it's a Marshall they're great. If it's a Marshall emulation or simulation, it starts expose the meh factor of "try to do all" pickups.

Re: SG 498T into Les Paul?

I've never really liked the harsh sound of a 498T even in an SG.

It's of the Gibson HB's that have an unusual 'grainy' sound, which I've never noticed with any other manufacturer. I'm assuming that that's intentional on Gibson's part.
