SG, but not an SG

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
I have never been an SG guy, but I have kinda wanted one. Finally saw one of these local (enough) at a great price! Traded my Fender Pro Jr. for it.

I have replaced the volume knob, turned the switch a bit, and polished the frets a little. Really solid guitar. Digging the neck. Flatish D? Shallow C? I'm digging it. Next up - Whole Lotta Humbuckers at some point.

I love the Vintage/Modern vibe. Been playing AC/DC and Sabbath obviously...

LTD Vipers always had more of a Les Paul dressed up as an SG vibe for me tonally, but I love that, personally. My first introduction to LTD's was a friend's Viper-301 way back in the day. Fell in love. The ESP Thin U neck profile is one of my faves.

Congrats!

What exactly is it you don't like about SGs? My hangup has always been that the neck and bridge just feel like someone took a Les Paul and mounted everything an inch off. So I was thoroughly disappointed when I got to try out an ESP Viper and it felt exactly the same.

You know, can't really say. The balance of it maybe?

Looks like an SG mated with a Fender Jaguar.

I've only ever played a few LTD guitars but they seem like a great value for the money.

Cool; never tried one, but always dug them. Seems like a worthy candidate for a modern SG.

Regarding the balance of traditional ones, some may be more dippy than others. Swapping the metal pegs on your tuners for plastic ones helps; some say having a vibrola also does.

Another trick I've found with balancing an SG is having the body rest on your right hip, so your right forearm is on the lower bout, which pulls the guitar in the opposite direction the neck wants to go. Mine has no neck dive, but doing this (and having a grippier strap) makes things right as rain.

The common method as I've understood it is to simply move the strap button to the upper horn.

^^ It's doable, like Tony has been doing for decades. But, you'd want a pretty long screw, since the horn is quite pointy and has all those angles, so there's not a lot of support at the very end. Or you can do at the back of the horn, or having a long metal insert - have seen British maker Andrew Guyton do this recently on some of his SG style builds.

The backnof the horn
Not on the point like a strat

Nice guitar!

I've tried them and they're nice guitars but the offset throws me

I love the Epi SG P90 Special I picked up earlier this year, thinking of getting another SG with Buckers

For those who want the more traditional look, I can vouch for this. Used especially, a pretty great deal.

For LTD, I confess I like this one, with its vaporwave shtick.

I've always liked the non-SG SGs better than The Real Thing. Tony Iommi's Jay Dee, John Diggins, and Patrick Eggle guitars were much cooler than the Gibson signature that came out. And, he actually played those old models.

Maybe ESP should've got some of Bob Taylor's streaky ebony instead of pau ferro 😄. It does want some of Monty's Montypresso.

It was cool to see him play an Old Boy replica at the farewell gig.

LTD are very solid guitars. Congrats!

The Vipers tend to have more neck dive than the SG.

Play some Doooooommmmm.
