SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

Just like the '63 SG jr I had in the early 70's. Cherry red, 1 P-90, super thin neck, wrap around TP...and vibrate like mofo when you strum it. maybe $2000.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

i already own one of my "perfect SGs:" the classic. red, p-90s, fat neck. bought mine for $650 in 2005. everything is stock on it. now i think they run around $900. the other perfect one would be the 61 re-issue. think that is around $1600. hey, look at me, i don't need to stinkin' custom shop! :)

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

Small pickguard, humbucker bridge and p90 neck, the neck joint from the Standard (not the one from the 61RI). Possibly a metallic finish in blue or copper, with the headstock from a LP Custom and white neck binding. I'd also want the neck a tad thinner and flatter both in fretboard radius and back contour, but only a tiny bit. I'd use that for everything.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

here's what really ticks me off: The doublecuts. The one horn on the left is just marginally larger than the other and IT KILLS ME!!! If they're that close to symmetry, why not just shave off the extra 2 ounces of wood and make it symmetrical??? It doesn't throw off the balance of an ES-335 does it? If I had my perfect SG, it would have 2 P90s and PERFECT SYMMETRY!

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

I own it already I just have to put it back together (easier said than done)

'62 SG Custom one of my absolute dream guitars, this one isn't mine but ideally what mine will look like when done.

Beautiful! You're a lucky boy.

I like that slight asymmetry, gives it a nice look. Anyone can make things symmetrical. That doesn't take any imagination.

You need to relax more son. Between this & your avatar, you come across as just a wee bit unstable; women & children probably run from you. Have you tried decaf? Horse tranquilizers?

I'm not ashamed to admit that if that thing were in my house, I'd try to mount it. Just too sexy!!!

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

Only issue is these are somewhat fragile guitars, the later SGs are a little tougher though my '66 neck snapped like a toothpick

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

I'd go with a HB bridge (probably some type of A2) w/ triple shot, and 2 low-noise strat-type SCs. Because I like a thicker neck profile, and SGs tend to be neck-heavy already, I would want a dense body wood, maybe maple. For finish, I'd go blue washed quilt maple, including the headstock. Ebony fingerboard with oval abalone inlays. Mint pickguard and tuner knobs. Controls would probably be a 5-way strat switch and three concentric pot for independent tone & vol on each pup.

That's my perfect SG too. Basically one like Glen Buxton's. Fell in love with that when I first saw the back cover of "Love It To Death" in the early 70s.

GB and Michael Bruce with their SGs were really my prototype guitar heroes, several years before I even discovered Lizzy!

Picked up this Epi last year to tide me over until I win the lottery...

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

I love SG's I just always end up going for Les Pauls. If I were gonna buy an SG today I'd get a 61ri and put a set of custom shop Duncans in it...based on Ants but with alnico 5 magnets.

If I were gonna have an SG built I'd get a 61ri with the neck profle of a R8 LP and the alnico 5 Ants...

+1. Clapton, Buxton, and Bruce did it for me when I was in my formative years. Loved SG's ever since.

And To juxtapose myself to the above message, I like symmetry. I think the whole world is better when you add some symmetry here and there. Not everywhere, but here, there. Certainly if the SG doublecut is that close to symmetry, why not just go the whole way with it, ya know? Maybe not, but It's something that bugs me about the design. Like the ES-335 again, that's perfectly symmetrical, and isn't it such a great aesthetic because of that? Easy on the eye AND the unstable-mind-craving-stability.

And women and children do not flee from me, but I can get a few shifty glances.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

Yeah Glen and Brenden Harkin from Starz had those old white SG's and they were big influences. I have a pic of Les with one when the SG/LP's first came out that always appealed to me as well.

Glen had a '61 or '62 that ended up with the horseshoe Bigsby and then the '64 with the Maestro. I keep thinking I'll grab one of those Epi Customs to hold me over. I am surprised how good most of the Epi SG's are. I shouldn't have sold the blue EE style Epi I had, it was a really good guitar.

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

My perfect SG would be a Les Paul...

Sorry, I couldn't resist

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

itd look just like this-

GibsonSG.jpg

but with 6100 frets and a 2" thick body

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

custom headstock inlay, grover tuners, bone nut, all natural finish, soft V neck with ebony board, 24 frets, and trapezoid inlays, neck-through with ever-so-slightly-thicker body, 3 phat cats(a5/a4n, a5/a3m, a2/a8b), small pickguard, gotoh hardware. for the electronics i'd have 3 volumes, one stacked tone, and two three way switches.

i'm guessing this would be something like 5k or more since it's totally/completely custom.

actually i changed my mind. it would be ebony black and pelham blue in alternating 1-1/2 inch diagonal stripes. instead of the phat cats, it'd be PPH, switching out the a2/a8 phat cat for an a2 custom/59 or similar, making the volumes push-pulls for coil cut, phase, and series for the neck and bridge pickups, and a mini-switch for taps(yes, TAPS) on the phat cats for more stratty sounds. the guard/trussrod cover/toggle plates would be creme.

Out of curiosity, how much would something like this go for?

Re: SG Lovers Only: Your Perfect SG

Let's say you had unlimited cash to build the SG of your dreams. What would it be like? Provide as many specs as possible, along with the kind of music you'd be playing on it. Also, take a guess as to how much it would actually cost to purchase such an SG.

- Keith

61 RI SG in ebony, with 50% increased body thickness, SD Iommi bridge and Seth Lover neck humbuckers, ebony fretboard, no inlays, black binding, and a Floyd Rose. Would be covered in massive amounts of skateboard, snowboard, metal and punk-rock stickers soon after arrival.

Musical style: Zerbofunkamoshadancecore :laugh2:

Expected price from the Gibson CS: about 4k MSRP / 2,5k street price

....

And women and children do not flee from me, but I can get a few shifty glances.
Admit it, the only reason they don´t run is because they´re locked in the classroom with you until the period is over :laugh2::beerchug:

Aha, I thought he probably had two. The one on that album cover looks like the pickups are mounted on the guard, but in other pics he has one with black pickup rings and a small guard.
