Sh-2 and Sh 14

Does anyone have any experience in putting an SH-2 Jazz in the neck and an SH-14 Custom 5 in the bridge? I'm doing a lot of christian rock stuff and am thinking of this combination.

Thanks,

The SH-2N is a good general purpose neck humbucker. It does anything well, but nothing spectacularly so. Can't comment on the Custom 5, never tried it.

Re: Sh-2 and Sh 14

You should be just fine, depending on the guitar.

Re: Sh-2 and Sh 14

it should work fine..what guitar do u have...? and honestly what do u play..? third day?.. Petra? ..delerious?

Re: Sh-2 and Sh 14

I am playing a Hamer Studio. I play a verity of christian rock, David Crowder, Tomlin, Hillsong....all the standard issue stuff. Using delay, dirty clean, distortion and tremelo form a pedal.

Re: Sh-2 and Sh 14

The Jazzz neck is very very versatile and works well with most bridge pups...it is not boomy like most neck pups.. I love using it in the parallel mode. I have not used the custom5 but IMO it should work real well.

Re: Sh-2 and Sh 14

I understand that's a popular combo for a LP style guitar. Should sound fine in a Studio.
I had a C5 in my Jackson PC-2. It's not quite like a Hamer Studio - Strat scale length, bolt on neck, thinner body, trem - but it sounded great.

Re: Sh-2 and Sh 14

Just my 2 cents..if u dont play a lot of distorted tones consider a 59 bridge. if this is your only guitar.

The types of tones those particular artists use are pretty "vintage" sounding with great cleans. Can I suggest you stay more in the vintage arena with a pickup? You might want to stick with a 59 set or an Alnico II Pro set or a Pearly Gates set. The 59 and Jazz necks are the pinicle of great neck pickups for humbucker equiped guitars. The A II Pro will be the cleanest/brightest, while the 59's will have a bit more output while the Pearly Gates is just a touch hotter.

When you go with something like the SH-14, your starting to get into the higher output, distortion grade pickups. This extra output will cause the front end of the amp to break up a little more and your cleans wont be as great. I know that allot of those songs have allot of softer delay sweeps and spanky type riffs that will not come through as authentic because of the lack in top end you'll hear when comparing a Custom 5 to a 59 or one of the other pickups.

I really feel that the 59 would suit you well-its ironically the same EQ curve as the Custom 5, but a more vinatage typer output. My 2 cents ;)

+1 I love my JB but I honestly think it is too hot many times... I still love using it..But I am sure the next guitar I get wont have high out put pup in the bridge..

Hamer head either 59 or custom5 will work well..if you do have other guitars then nothing like the cusotm5 jazz combo or custom 5 59 neck combo...other wise i suggest using a 59 bridge...

either way u gonna have good tones

Re: Sh-2 and Sh 14

i think that any pickup with the right settings and with the volume set back will get good cleans, and i dont the Custom 5 is any different. i have one in one of my acrylics and i still get great cleans. i think that with distortion (mild or heavy) a simple roll back or increase in volume can make all the difference. ie with heavy gain and guitar volume on like 3-5, its zep/aerosmith city! and with it rolled up it'll do "rawk" to metal.

and yes, i hate the word "rawk" but, honestly....its fitting here...i can't believe i just said that. I PROMISED MYSELF! I PROMISED MYSELF! i want you to know i died a little on the inside typing that....

Re: Sh-2 and Sh 14

Ive tried the C5, and Im not saying that any pickup cant be played clean, but there is definatly a trade off when you start applying more winds to a pickup. The mids increase/treble decreases and you start getting more hair in the mids and low frequencies (more hair in the low frequencies in this particular case). Definatly if your looking to try to get the best of both worlds (Distortion and lower gain tones) the C5 is something to consider. But, if youve listened to any of the tones the guitarists for those worship bands are getting, the majority (probably 75%) of what they are playing is clean to mid gain type stuff. Ive played in church worship bands for about 8 or 9 years and Im familliar with those bands; the standard modern-worship bands that newer minded churches like to reproduce. If your looking to reproduce those tyes of tones, I still recommend the 59 set in your particular guitar. I dont think you will be disappointed. But, as I mentioned before, if your looking to get the full package deal (distorted and clean) then definatly consider the C5-you might love it-but understand that there is a trade off.

Re: Sh-2 and Sh 14

I had the combination in my Epi SG and it would work perfectly well for what you want. The C5 was perfect for AC/DC type riffage, but it can also, as Blueman says, do cleans surprisingly well. The Jazz is excellent indeed for cleans, although I wasn't keen on it for soloing.

This is exactly what I had in mind. I love the JB Jazz combo and along with the 5 way switch it is very versatile.. but honestly I defiantly do not want anther guitar with a high out put pup in the bridge...i do play something similar to what you play. The JB cleans up well but as Micah put it there is slight trade off. I wanted a best of both worlds and am getting it. But my next guitar is going to have medium or low output pups. I am very sure though that the C5 and jazz will work very well.... You cant go wrong with that combo. I wanted that combo on another guitar project.. but now am leaning towards a lower out put pup in that. But my JB JAZZ combo stays ...
Seriously if you have guitars that serve you well for playing cleans then go for it.
