SH-2n Jazz in a Les Paul...

Re: SH-2n Jazz in a Les Paul...

i too was thinkin of the jazz for my LP.
but the discriptions of it being so clear and good under higain made me think other wise and move towards the likings of the seth lover.
if its so easy to get it to sound so good under heavy distortion while retaining a very usable clean sound then it wouldn´t make sense playing it in such a hard instrument as a LP as oposed to a good strat or schecter.
thats only a thought,not a fact.
the seths have more mids, less bass, and are...PAF´s.and thats a fact.

I *like* them in the neck, but I don't *love* them in the neck. I personally don't think they sing as well as a 59 or alnico pro, BB, etc. They handle gain well, and don't get as boomy as a 59 can (if not eq'ed right), but I also think they are missing something.

Others will disagree I'm sure, but for me I prefer a warmer/fatter pup in that position. Plus when I play dirty bluesy/hendrix type stuff on the neck pup, the Jazz doesn't "cut it" IMO. I think it's best for more fusiony or shred type stuff. Then again if you had a "dark" sounding Paul it may be the ticket.

I'm with you on all of that.

Had a Jazz-n in an LP Standard once -- just too thin. I think it was partly the guitar which was a little bright for an LP, but the Jazz I think is well-named in that it would probably be ideal for an archtop which has plenty of built-in fat. Otherwise a Seth or an A2Pro would be my first Duncan choice for the neck -- after a Jon Moore 'bucker.

By the way, you folks, the AIIP is The Jazz Model with a A2 mag.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Someone told me that a while ago.

Yes, you made perfect sense. I need an articulate yet warm and creamy neck pickup.

Seth Lover or Alnico 2 Pro -- without cover. If you need a little more heat (output) or warmth, swap out for Alnico 4 or 5.

How about for a little more heat, a PG?

I don't buy that. Switching a Jazz to an Alnico 2 would make it sound even thinner and weaker. The A2 Pro is definitely fatter and warmer than a Jazz.

I don't have any personal experience with PG but from what I understand, it's like the Jazz in that it's kind of a top-heavy pickup with weak bass. It would give you more "sizzle" (as advertised) but no warmth.

+1

The AIIpro has more bass than the jazz. That wouldn't make much sense given the a2 magnet.

Re: SH-2n Jazz in a Les Paul...

Well, from what I've been told, the A2P and the Jazz have the same windings, same gauge, same everything except for the magnet.

I dunno if they are the same or not, but I put an A2 in my JazzN, and it sounds awefully darn close to an A2p. If they aren't the same, the difference is pretty small.

Re: SH-2n Jazz in a Les Paul...

I just searched my old threads. It was Luke Duke who told me the A2P and Jazz were essentially the same pickup with different magnets. Maybe he'll chime in and confirm.
