Sh-4 JB Set?

Re: Sh-4 JB Set?

At the risk of enraging the fanboy hordes who insist it is a versatile pickup, it isn't particularly all that good for either.

Let me describe what is often considered the prime tone for Jazz: warm, but articluate neck pickup with a rolled off small value capacitor. Maybe a Tele neck pickup with a .018 cap rolled back to 5 or 6.

Lists of pickups that wouldn't be my first choice:
Jazz neck
Jazz bridge

Re: Sh-4 JB Set?

Throughout my long 3 years of being on the SD forum, I have never found any official word on what "JB" stands for. I know for a fact that the former EVH (now the 78) officially stood for "Evenly Voiced Harmomics" though. There is rumour that it stood for "Jazz/Blues".

Considering its output and trebly tone character is it like EMG was made for jazz/blues but both became rock and metal players favorite?

No, the Jazz/JB combo became popular because it was one of the first replacement pickup sets and famous people started using them, so more people started using them.

EMGs got popular because... I don't actually know how. Their new sets have been getting better, but the old ones were less than satisfactory, and that's from a guy that doesn't really dislike any pickups, pedals, or amps.

Jazzy Bluesy.

Re: Sh-4 JB Set?

JB stands for JB ;-)

There is at least one nice article that recounts interviews with Seymour himself on building the "TeleGib", and winding the pickups for it/ to give to Jeff Beck.

Re: Sh-4 JB Set?

I just remembered something about the Jazz/JB set. The Jazz was originally called the JM. Named after John Milner from American Graffiti.

This I will certainly agree. Like the Jazz isn't my first (or 5th) choice for actual jazz. In the end, it is just a name.
