SH-5 Custom in a Semi Hollow Singlecut PRS?

So the story goes, I have a SH-5 Custom laying around. I have a S2 PRS Semi Hollow Singlecut with the PRS #7 pickups. I kinda still dig the neck but I'm wanting more gusto in the bridge. I play classic/southern rock, hard rock, modern country (repackaged 70s/80s rock), and mostly standard tuning or Drop D. I'm not worried about the output difference between the two pups, not a problem for me. No metal or heavy detuned stuff though. Med-high gain.

I want to make sure it won't be a big mistake as I've never tried it and I don't want to take the time to put it in only to bring it back out because it feedbacks too much or it isn't a good fit for that type of guitar.

Any other people try a Custom/SH-5 in a similar guitar? If it isn't going to be a complete mistake, I might try the swap this weekend.

Thanks!

Re: SH-5 Custom in a Semi Hollow Singlecut PRS?

Never owned a semi-hollow unfortunately, but I do have a Custom that I put in a mahogany body maple bolt on neck 24.75" scale guitar.

EPIC SOUNDING

If you want metal or high gain sound, it'll do it with great clarity and authority, no doubt, BUT

I find the Custom to be surprisingly versatile for a supposedly high gain beast! It's listed as a high output pickup, and it's certainly NOT lacking in that department, but there's an openness and balance to it that most typical mid-hump high output pickups do not have. I've A/B'd it with other high output pickups and it feels and sounds like it's got less output than all of them, but still retained the fullness and saturation. Now I never accurately measured the exact millivolt output (you can't just compare DC Resistance for pickups of different magnets and winding specs) and compare it to other high output beasts but, personally I would say it feels like a "very hot medium-hot pickup" or a "lowest output pickup to be considered high output".

Given that you play with medium gain and the Custom is wax potted by default, you shouldn't be having feedback problems with the semi-hollow either. I would say go for it!

Actually, I think a Custom would sound great in that guitar.

Ok, it's in and I love it! Thanks guys for the help...

I was worried it would be over the top for the kinds of music I play but it really sounds good in this guitar. Brightens it up since it's so warm.

In this process I found a SH-2 Jazz neck in the drawer and that will get installed this weekend maybe if I have time. I like the PRS neck, but I am curious now.
