Yes, in a general manner.

If someone asked me, "do you want a free SH-4 or SH-5?", I'd go with an SH-5 every time.

But if someone asked me, "do you want a free SH-4 or SH-5?", and I wanted RATT tone, I'd go with the SH-4.

And if someone asked me, "do you want a free SH-4 or SH-5?", and I wanted an 80's hair metal tone, I'd go with the SH-4.

VH1 = SH-5
RATT = SH-4

I am someone who likes the Custom better than the JB, too. But for what the OP wants, it sounds more like the JB will get there rather than the Custom.

Ha anybody suggested the Custom Custom?
Sounds like the OP is looking for more upper mids and to get closer to an 80’s type tone.
I’d think the JB or CC would be better choices than the C5.

Well, the Custom Custom can be weird in basswood. I've heard a few instances where it works, and more than that when it doesn't. It is a shame, because the CC is one of my favorites in alder or ash.

Everyone- thank you! I went with the JB and Jazz combo but the SH-5 was in the running for a while. I’ll see how this goes and worst case I can flip it!

Ordered notched baseplates so I won’t see them for a bit. Will report back once done.

In the meantime I’m thinking of retiring the whole thing. Pots, switch, jack, the whole thing.

Bonus points: any recommendations for wire? Figure some cloth 22awg- will that cover the whole rewiring job?

I was gonna say the pickup that gives you Ratt - JB, RTM, maybe Full Shred in a dark guitar...

is NOT the pickup that does VH1 in any acceptable way. 1984, maybe....with some tone manipulation.

You sir, have a choice to make! For overall 80's tone, the JB was the right choice.

Hah, thanks Aceman! I think I’ll be quite pleased with it overall. Having a Helix I’m hoping the EQ abd other tools will get me in the VH1 ballpark.

Oh - using a Helix. Yeah, just EQ/Model/Effect into submission.
