SH-5 magnet swap

Hi!
I´ve got an SH-5 in my Les Paul Custom.
Sounds good, but I would like more high mids and crunch, and less bass while keeping things tight and punchy. (More like a JB but with a tighter low end)
Which alnico magnet would give me that sound ?

Thanks :)

Re: SH-5 magnet swap

Ceramics are pretty bright, to me they're the brighest, so I don't know where you can go from here.

The JB has an A5 which gives it treble and lots of low end. To my ears, it's not as bright as a ceramic though (other guys may differ on this).

Are you using 500K pots? Disconnecting the tone pot may help. Also raise the bridge PU's pole pieces to about 1/8" (on the screw coil).

I'm usually struggling to cut down the brightness on my bridge PU's, so this is a new one for me. Maybe you need a JB with a ceramic in it. Medium & lower output PU's with A5's have more treble than overwound PU's, and single coils (P-90, Phat Cat), are brighter than HB's.

Someone's going to say, "Alnico 8" before too long.

But to me, it sounds like you need a Full Shred.

Re: SH-5 magnet swap

Well I´ve just been emailing with Kevin at Smit´s, he´s gonna ship me an alnico 5 to put in my sh-5.. Don´t have a clue how it will sound though he he..

Re: SH-5 magnet swap

SH-5 (ceramic) will be swapping the magnet to alnico 5.
Is that basically a SH-14 C-5 ??

Re: SH-5 magnet swap

Yup. You may find the overall tone a bit deader and lacking in mids, or, you may like it. It will have massive bottom, though.

Re: SH-5 magnet swap

I didn't care for the SH-5 in my Les paul . . it was too compressed sounding, a little shrill and not tight enough, The CC was nice and warm but too loose and the excessive mid attack got a bit annoying, for my Les Paul I keep coming back to the C-5, tight (low end and all around), nice big open sound, cuts yet is warm, good cleans . . . so far great for everything, I love it! Gotta love magnet swaps, just make sure you get a good quality magnet, I had an A5 from an epiphone pickup and it SUCKED, then I tried a Real A5 from a dimarzio (then bought one from martinsixstringcustoms) and it was a world of difference, way punchier

If you happen to find something like a JB with a tighter bottom, let me and the rest of us know OK. That would be sweet!

Isn't this how some have described the PATB-1?

I'd like to find out myself buuuuut......someone needs to sell me one first :D

I wouldn't disconnect the tone pot: it may be needed later. If anything, maybe swap 'em for "no load" tone pots that disconnect themselves on the zero detent.

I'd think that the Full Shred would be what you want, like the other dude said, but I've never tried it (that's my next next project guitar, after my next one lol).

Re: SH-5 magnet swap

Thanks for the replies :)
Hmm I´m a bit worried that the alnico 5 will sound too scooped..
Smit´s MT12-5 is suppose to be in the same ballpark as the JB but tighter.

I'd use an a4 magnet, and allen heads on the high E, B and G. That pickup would be quite bright, would have uppermids, some lowermids but definitely much less than CC and Custom, and still a tight bass, but not as much as C5 or Custom. The allen heads gives you more uppermids, more snap. But I myself would have hated that pickup. I love CCs.

Good luck,

B

Re: SH-5 magnet swap

Everybody is talking about the FS, but why not a Demon? That's a pickup I think this guy might like.

Re: SH-5 magnet swap

the C5 will not be too lacking in the mids...i especially wouldn't think so in an LP. if can beef up my ACRYLIC guitars, im sure it'll sound great in a real LP.

oh, and +1 on the demon, that was the first one i thought of anyway...honestly i've never used one, but the description said "demon" to me. good luck!
