SH-5 vs. JB

Out of the SH-5 and the JB which one is brighter and which one cleans up better? And which one is fatter? I realize this question has probably already been asked but I'm new.

Re: SH-5 vs. JB

The SH-5 has thicker rhythm, the JB has thicker solo tone. Neither is ideal for cleans honestly.

Re: SH-5 vs. JB

the JB's brighter and cleans up better from the volume control, the customs are all fatter, and the JB has a better (but not good) clean tone IMO

Re: SH-5 vs. JB

I just put an SH-5 in my Epi LP and I am loving it. Its got great output, but does clean up better than most other pickups with ceramic mags. To be honest if I didn't already know what kinda magnet was in it I wouldn't guess it was ceramic as it certainly doesn't act like one for the most part. The cleans aren't mind blowing, but I think they're pretty good for a high output pickup.

Re: SH-5 vs. JB

Well as far as clean goes, they ARE high-output humbuckers after all. That said, it really isn't all that hard to wire a JB or Custom for coil splitting. You can get a great clean from either of them that way, especially the JB (people never shut up about the strat-like cleans from a split JB).

But in the end, certainly the JB's upper-mid peak gives it a crunchiness that you won't get in the SH-5. The SH-5 on the other hand, is about my favorite Duncan humbucker for one very simple reason.

It is, to me, the voice of rock. Good old PAF-based rock...only with the kind of oomph you'd expect in a modern humbucker. It's not overly bright, but there is clarity to be had, and drop D is a a delight. It sounds outright mean, yet classy.

+1 on the JB being brighter. I like the custom more for beefy rhythm and the JB more for solos. I like the cleans on the JB more, but it needs the volume rolled way back.

Re: SH-5 vs. JB

JB's got more upper mids/presence for sure.
Sounds great in Alder and Mahogany body/Maple top from my first hand experience, otherwise I dunno about other body woods.
