SH-5 ?? Yes or no??

Re: SH-5 ?? Yes or no??

:offtopic: BTW, Amy..I liked what I heard on your site, are there any plans for a Full Length solo album from you?

Re: SH-5 ?? Yes or no??

duncan does not make ANY pups that sound like the EVO
for a vanhalen, vai tone the custom will work
i personally think the the custom is much better sounding than the EVO
the EVO is very abrassive and harsh
the custom on the other hand has a smoother tone and more of the backed off mids tone.
like evan already said it is a hot rodded P.A.F tone.

Re: SH-5 ?? Yes or no??

Hey Amy, I just want to eco what has been said already, and also throw in (since you're an endorsee) if you want to go the custom shop route a JB/C5 hybrid gets some very nice tones as well. Zhangliqun gave you the most qualifying statements about direction though.

Another plug for the SH-5 Custom here.

For anything heavier it´s IMO the perfect blend between the classic tone of a PAF and the chunky aggression of the Distortion, very literally as the website describes "A P.A.F. on Steroids". Clear but thick, quite an even response across the tonal spectrum, and cleans up nicely when you roll off the volume.... I find the cleans and the split tone to be a bit anemic or "stale", but they ARE usable...just not as good as a Jazz, Cool Rails or Split JB.

My personal favorite bridge pickup, all of the soundclips on my website (and most of our forthcoming album) were done with that pickup, take a listen if you´re interested ;)

+1.

The Custom is a GREAT hard rock pickup. It seems beautifully balanced to me, from the tight chunky bottom end through punchy mids to screaming highs. Very responsive to changes in volume, tone and picking strength. I've never tried splitting it, but I find the cleans work very well when rolling the volume back. Love the way every note/string retains clarity under gain. I'm generally a fan of PAF-style pickups, mostly A2, but the Custom is my choice for beefing it up. It's the only ceramic humbucker I've ever liked, and I like it a lot.

Re: SH-5 ?? Yes or no??

The Custom is a great pickup, but like a few people have said it kinda depends on the guitar too. I happen to be a JB fan, I absolutely love the sound of Alnico 5 magnets, and the JB can pump out some huge rock tones. I also have an Invader, which is ceramic, and that things absolutely rumbles, huge low end, in-your-face distortion. Somebody might wish to correct me, but in general i think of Alnico 5 pups as tighter, and more balanced, while ceramics, are hotter with more output.

Hi ..
Not sure if this is the right place to say so, but my news page here has a link to the guitar and pickups.. I am pretty happy and here it is:
We added more switches to get around 25 different sounds for this guitar. I put in Seymour Duncan (of course) Almeco APH-1n in the neck and a custom custom part # TB-11 for the Bridge pickup and had each pickup ordered with the 4 way conductor wires for versatility..
And this was all put on my new Daisy Rock Guitar whom I am currently endorsed with. Mind you, my amp situation is not great at all, but I am getting a great tone and I too, am using a metal zone pedal..
I am also currently wondering if anyone has a older used Ibaneze RG 550 available-
Please see my site at Http://Amyschugar.com and email me at: Amy@amyschugar.com

Re: SH-5 ?? Yes or no??

Well, like I said in my other thread, I got the Custom installed a week ago, and I'm not really content. Too weak, not enouh output (its really moe medium than high, methinks). I likea abssy tone, so this sin't exactly what I'm looking for. It does, however, maintain clarity during distortion, so it ain't all bad

If you're interested in a pedal that can do Metalzone, but BIGGER, then I'd recommend trying the G2D Morpheus (from www.g2d.co.nz). I replaced a Metalzone with one and found it really stunning. The soundclips on the site are a bit scooped for my liking, but it has great mid-range control to get the amount you want.

BTW, no I'm not affiliated - just use two of their pedals on a regular basis (also have Maxon and Boss dist/OD pedals).

BTW, welcome to the forum :)

Re: SH-5 ?? Yes or no??

Amy-
Welcome. To my ear the Evolution is somewhat "harsh" compared to most Duncans I have tried. It isn't a bad pickup.. it is kinda like a Vintage 30 speaker versus a 12/75, just different. I think the Custom, Custom 5 or JB would be worth checking out. Try one out for a week or so. It always takes me at least that long to tweak my amp settings and really dial-in my rig for a new pickup. I have a Jem and replaced the Evos with a Custom 5 (B) and an Alnico Pro II (N), I think it sounds much better IMO.

Good luck.

Hi Amy,

I can't ad anything to what has already been said.....

What I will say is Schugar/Schenker friggin ROCKS!!!! I loved the clip of UFOs "Rock Bottom"; I used to be a big UFO fan way back & did "Doctor Doctor" on a regular basis.

Great site, great clips....I'll be grabbing that disc!!!

WELCOME....& feel free to tell Michael he's welcome to drop in too!!! :beerchug:

Re: SH-5 ?? Yes or no??

I'm going to throw my 2 cents n too...

I have an EVO and it Kicks ass in the right guitar. The closest I have found in a Duncan would be the Full Shred. It has enough output and has huge bottom and highs that sing with just the right amount bite. I wish I had found it (Full Shred) sooner.

CHeers!
