SH-55 seth lover model

Re: SH-55 seth lover model

I would like to bump this thread and try and see some answers to those last two questions. What pickup would work in the neck with a Seth bridge(or in the bridge with a Seth neck), and How much does takeing the covers off affect tone?

Re: SH-55 seth lover model

Take the Ibanez pickup out and put an A2 magnet in. Maybe your are on the way. Less volume, rounder highs!

Re: SH-55 seth lover model

The only disadvantage I know of is that the pickup is not wax potted, therefore at louder volumes it gets honky, like the description says. If you want its wax-potted cousin, the '59 is very close.

Re: SH-55 seth lover model

Is there some special reason that removing the covers on Seths is forbidden? I am assuming that since exposed bobbins is not an option for purchase that there must be a dire consequence if that cover is not there.

I'm thinking about buying one for a bandmate (classic starving artist) to put in an Ibanez HSS guitar. The stock 'bucker is too loud and brash compared to the single coils. The guitar's asthetic factor kind of requires that there be no chrome pickup cover at the bridge pickup.

If removing the cover from a Seth would be suicidal of significantly affect the tone in a bad way I'll just spring for a '59 with two black coils.

Thanks in advance.

If you look at my profile, you'll see the 77 Gibson doubleneck I've got. The bridge on the 6 is a Seth and the neck on the 12 is a Seth. The other two pickups are Antiquites. I've had absolutely no problems with the covers being off the Seths. For any kind of rock, these pickups are smokin and SOOO vintage sounding. I've used this guitar for metal like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Metallica, etc... and have had no problems either. Now, most of my amps have masters like my Valvetronix or Vetta, or are non-master small wattage amps where feedback really isn't an issue (the squealy kind). However, two of my amps are 30 watt and 50 watt non-masters--a Bogen and a Univox U1246B. No feedback problems with them. The Univox I would compare favorably to my 73 Marshall 50 watter as far as tone and volume, before I sold the Marshall 15 years ago. Granted, the second I touch the strings I get awesome harmonic feedback so you better start playing right away, but that's standing within five feet of the amp. Hope this helped some.

Great mids! :fingersx: Very classic sounding too. I really (really) like the Seth Lover bridge for classic rock. I am partial to a5 neck pickups, but the SL neck sounds very nice if it fits your style.

Wax-potting will change the tone. You will lose some of that great mid honk.

Re: SH-55 seth lover model

I have a set of them that were in my LP. I too was concerned about the squealing, and it did happen to me on occasion. I ended up finding a trick. I took off the covers and put some masking tape under them and put them back on nice and tight. I also replaced the mounting springs with foam. That worked really well.

Later, I just took the covers off and that helped as well. The difference in tone from covers to no covers, is less of a ringing overtone without the covers. I actually prefer them without the covers.

Not to highjack, but I may be selling mine very soon. They are zebra with covers and the foam and stuff. I really want to try the new Area Tele pups from Dimarzio, and the sale of these will fund that.
