SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

I think the best use for the Jazz is ultra clean passages and heavy gain shredding. The jazz just doesn't seem to be capable of muddying up no matter what you throw at it. Personally, I am not a dedicated shredder, I'm enjoying the medium gain rock, blues, etc. more often these days and the 59 kills the jazz in that department.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

Lewisstorer, I've had both the SH6 and the SH8 in my LP (full mahogany guitar). In my experince, they're quite different pickups. Inteded for the same genres, sure, but I would think (been a while since I had it) the SH6 would be a bit more balanced, while the SH8 is just about the chuggiest pickup you can get. I've had some troubles making it cut through in band situations, since it is very dark (it actually kinda puts the guitar in the grey zone between guitar and bass), but I do love the tone it gives me when distorted (mind you, this is NOT your PU of choice if you wanna play cleans. get another pickup for the neck for that).

What you WILL get is just about the heaviest sounding bridge pickup money can buy, and here's a fun little bonus most people seem to be completely unaware of: since it's ouput is so high, it actually does 70's crunchy tones very, very well. What would usually be just a bit of a harsh clean for most guitars, this thing will turn into a full on 70's heavy rock crunch.

and thats in Mahogany......so In my Alder there is surely NO Chance it will get muddy?. Ok so mine has a Mahogany neck which is obviously warm BUT I cant see that being enough to ruin the tone from the Invader seeing as the main part of my guitar is Alder. Even the Fretboard is Rosewood which is just as balanced as Alder

If anyone wants to know I found this great website showing how different Woods affect tone - http://www.soundunlimited.co.uk/article_Guitar_Tone_Woods_39.html

Only one way to find out. Get the Invader and try it. If you don't like it, swap for the distortion.

I'd give the Distortion a go first, but I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment. Take advantage of that 21-day exchange policy.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

I have no experience with a soldering Iron though (shameful I know lol) so Swapping pickups would mean me paying a shop to do it which in the UK the cheapest price is £20 per pickup :O so like $50 or something close. I will learn in due time but I dont forsee me getting Soldering down in time to do this sadly. Thats why Im trying to be thorough tbh. Hopefully I love my choice so much I dont want to change.

hey I have a 50% success rate lol

Step 1: Buy some wire, soldering thread and some sheet metal.
Step 2: Borrow a soldering iron rfom someone who owns one. If they whinge about it, just remind them the damn things are almost unbreakable.
Step 3: Cut pieces of wire, clean off the ends.
Step 4: Spend 15 minutes soldering the iwres to the sheet metal

Congratulations, you know know how to solder.

Step 5: Apply step 4 on guitar.
Step 6: Great success!

This is one of those things where you dont take it to a guitar shop to have done. Its simple enough just print out the diagram then go down to your handy man neighbor and ask him if you buy him a pint if he will solder the connections for you.

Dude, if you live in Leeds I'll do it for **** all.

Anyone who can solder will be able to figure out the diagram and wire it up. Seymour Duncan diagrams are pretty clear and straight forward.

This reminds me of when I was living in Oz, I found this relly nice acoustic that had the headstock broken of. The building next-door was a wood shop, so I just bought the bloke who owned it a six-pack, and he repaired it for me. Looked really nice too.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

I know guys I feel ashamed that Ive never used an Soldering Iron. Im a pretty hands on DIY type of guy too but when it comes to Guitar electrics Im a total noob atm. I dont have any soldering equipment yet either.

I will definitely be doing this in the future though because getting shops to do is just plain ridiculous.

and also I was thinking that that new Seymour Duncan Liberator for it. Once its soldered in then NO MORE Soldering pups ever again and that too me sounds awesome. Ive watched the video and its so obvious anyone can do whats required from that and pretty quickly too....

I do still think Jazz over 59 for sparkling cleans and great warm solos........... and Im thinking Invader as Alder body and Rosewood fretboard are nice and balanced and even though Ive got a Mahogany neck I dont think thats enough to ruin the tone into being muddy/bassy

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

Ive had the Jazz neck in a few guitars and warm solos? No. Not in a single one of those guitars.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

So you think the Jazz doesn't get a good solo tone?.......

Ive looked at the 59 for the neck and just thought because the Jazz does acoustic cleans better than that should be the one I use....HOWEVER not at the expense of a good solo tone with high gain.

So is the 59 good at doing ultra cleans AND then a nice high gain warm solo tone a la Pantera?

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

My magical recipe: les Paul + jazz + 250k pots + alnico8 or 2 depending on how hot the bridgepickup is.

Really, that's as juicy and Fat yet tight and articulate as it gets.great tone.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

No not really would also neuter its ability to push your preamp hard. Seems like you really like the idea of the Invader why not just try it? Buy from a authorized dealer that way if its not the pickup for you you can swap it. Gives you 21 days to decide if its the right pickup for you.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

great thread- i never know to recommend for the kidz who want todays loud distorted guitar sound (aka mayhem or brutal- as if people get hurt from just a bunxh of detubed chords) but can't get active pkups if they want to keep a neck pkup or use coil tap. usually i just tell em, get emgs cuz thats what u want- even with solid state. but this invader thing, which ive never heard, may have much cred from satisfied users. As i major lover of the sh6, i can only vouch for its Dokken/Megadeth tight crunch and violence, but i plead ignorance Pantera and post... Master of Puppets took me five tries before i bought it. One time, it was bcuz i bought Exodus instead, and Gary Holt, back in the day used the sh5- ceramic Custom. my final word would be- try the Invader because thats what it was made for and should nail what you want, then get like a mahogany epiphone or ibanez cheap and try different pickups on it ( as well as tunings or strings or whammy- whatnot) Once u experience the religion of SDunc magick, youll get it. youll try your invader on someone elses amp next year and ask us what we think etc. its a journey many of us here know, the tone quests, and in your case, im guessing it begins with the Invader. Later youll have loved sh6 or sh5 or Blackouts or Livewire etc. so thats why i say, buy or borrow a cheap but heavy beater gtr for other tones. Mark my words, when you outgrow Line6 stuff, you will never outgrow the tools that just NAIL the sound that God wanted put in yr head to deliver to hungry throngs, and nailing a KIIIILLLER tone is
better than being versatile.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

If you're set on the invader, the jazz will not necessarily match well, it is not exactly warm, just very clear and tight under gain. The 59 might be a better match as it is a bit warmer than the jazz. If you are going for direct contrast though, from chimey sparkling clean to bottom heavy brutal, then the jazz/invader would be perfect for that.

Re: SH-6 vs SH-8???!!!

The invader should be great in an alder guitar unless you want the cutting tone of the sh-6. Besides synyster gates uses invaders in his all mahogany schecters and his tone is heavy and punchy but not at all muddy...

I never know what to recommend for the kids who want today's loud distorted guitar sound (aka mayhem or brutal- as if people get hurt from just a bunch of detuned chords) but can't get active pickups if they want to keep a neck pickup or use coil tapping. Usually I just tell em, "Get EMGs, because that's what you want, even with solid state."

But this invader thing, which I've never heard, may have quite the credibility from satisfied users. As a major lover of the SH-6, I can only vouch for its Dokken/Megadeth tight crunch and violence, but I plead ignorance Pantera and post... Ed: I can't translate this, unfortunately.

Master of Puppets took me five tries before I bought it. One time, it was because I bought Exodus instead, and Gary Holt, back in the day used the SH-5 ceramic Custom. My final word would be to try the Invader because that's what it was made for, and it should nail what you want.
