Oddly enough I tried one today for the first time. I got a DD pair off Ebay two weeks ago. I finally had the chance to install them in a Les Paul and give them a try at practice today. I've been using a DD in the bridge of my #1 Les Paul for 18 years and that ain't about to change, the neck of that guitar has a Duncan '59. Anyway, I found the DD neck great for leads and high gain distorted stuff but to play cleans, which is what I use the neck pup for it was way too much and wouldn't clean up very well. I don't have it split nor have I ever split a DD that I can remember.........In hindsight I would stick with the vintage types in the neck spot-PG/59/Jazz/AlnicoII......just one persons opinion.
I use a Distortion set too. The neck pup is not harsh as the bridge one. I think it is good enough to play metal cleans, it also is crunchy if you pick hard even in clean chords and I like it. Before buying this set I used more the bridge pup alone. Now I prefer use bridge and neck together. Their tone are great this way. Now I am even using them in series, this way is brutal.
I've had the DD in the neck of a couple guitars (both times with a PATB1 in the bridge) and it's awesome for high gain soloing. If you play metal, I'd definitely recommend it. It's not as good as, say, a 59 clean, but it's not bad at all. Highly recommended!
DD neck split is one my favorite sounds. Its the perfect balance between chime and smooth. I have a DD stud coil stuck to the side of my filing cabinet right now, looking for a project.
I love the 59 in the neck. It's vintage sounding and perfect. I hated the Jazz. It sounded way too fat and wasn't as clean as the 59. My opinion of course.
I have a Distortion Mayhem set in a Charvel 750XL. I used a Mega 5 way E switch that allows Nh Ns N+Bh Bs Bh. Great array of tones. I also have a push pull tone that reverses the phase in the middle position.
hey, guys! What's the tonal differrence between JB and DD?
I really wonder about :
which is quieter?
which is warmer?
which is more dynamic?
which is smoother?
which suits both blues and thrash?
thanks for any advice,
sincerely, GreatWallGuard

Quieter: I dunno
Warmer: JB I suppose, though neither is warm.
Dynamics: propably JB, that oversized ceramic magnet ain't gonna add dynamics to DD
Smoother: propably JB, but it ain't really smooth either
Both blues and trash: JB moreso, but rather a Custom for blues rock stuff (think Gary Moore)
