Re: sh6 vs dimarzio super distortion
When this thread first came up I was surprised that people posted opinions that didn't match mine.
I too a break to listen to my SD/DD results again and I found my memory to be off. My impression on all these heavy ceramics is definitely in flux, and it depends on the playing, too. I experienced the same with Gibson's 500T, which I liked best of the whole bunch at first, until I discovered that it isn't paying much attention to my playing.
Right now I would say that in the spectrum of medium-high to high resistance ceramic pickups the SD is definitely closest to a PAF in character. It has that even, bright but not piercing spectrum. It's very "direct", tight, probably due to the screw poles.
The DD on the other hand is not overall as bright, but it has some high mids that are on the piercing side. There is some JB mixed in there. Which is hardly surprising given that it's the JB coils. And it's fatter.
I would say there's more control in the DD at higher gain, more in the SD at medium gains. I guess that classifies the SD more on the classic rock side, the DD more on the metal side.
Right now I'd give the nood to the SD, but that seems to change regularly. This is all in a LP, I should really slam these into my Floyded Kramer Focus.
