sh6 vs dimarzio super distortion

Re: sh6 vs dimarzio super distortion

I had a vivid dream once where I was having a conversation with George Lynch discussing guitar gear. I told him I hadn't really listened to much of his music. He seemed non-affected by it.

Re: sh6 vs dimarzio super distortion

Check out Lynch's REH video. He's recording overdubs (for the Wicked Senstion album) using a gorgeous orange quilted ESP and one can clearly see the bridge pickup has a row of hex screws and looks just like a Screamin Demon. It was probably a prototype of some sort, but IMO it sounds a lot closer to a Demon than a Distortion. I would never believe Wicked Sensation is a Distortion, the tone is much too smooth.
The camo ESP is a Parallel Axis PU, the blue ESP is the DD, and the quilted ESP is the Demon (proto or not). It has the least power of the bunch. That blue ESP with the DD is the baddest tone ever for metal. You should all check out that REH video if you have not.

Re: sh6 vs dimarzio super distortion

Exactly!
But is the PA in the camo ESP a PATB-2 or a PATB-1 ? My guess is PATB-2. Either way, IMHO, it sounds horrible compared to the blue ESP w/ the Distortion.

Right on. I was going to buy a PATB until I heard Lynch use it. lol I would think it was the PATB-2, though.

LOL! Same for me, I've always been interested by the PATB-2, but when I heard this tone, I steered myself away from it VERY quickly.

Re: sh6 vs dimarzio super distortion

When this thread first came up I was surprised that people posted opinions that didn't match mine.

I too a break to listen to my SD/DD results again and I found my memory to be off. My impression on all these heavy ceramics is definitely in flux, and it depends on the playing, too. I experienced the same with Gibson's 500T, which I liked best of the whole bunch at first, until I discovered that it isn't paying much attention to my playing.

Right now I would say that in the spectrum of medium-high to high resistance ceramic pickups the SD is definitely closest to a PAF in character. It has that even, bright but not piercing spectrum. It's very "direct", tight, probably due to the screw poles.

The DD on the other hand is not overall as bright, but it has some high mids that are on the piercing side. There is some JB mixed in there. Which is hardly surprising given that it's the JB coils. And it's fatter.

I would say there's more control in the DD at higher gain, more in the SD at medium gains. I guess that classifies the SD more on the classic rock side, the DD more on the metal side.

Right now I'd give the nood to the SD, but that seems to change regularly. This is all in a LP, I should really slam these into my Floyded Kramer Focus.

Yeah, it's a shame too, because I wanted to like them. Oh well, maybe if I try one out some day I will change my mind.

Re: sh6 vs dimarzio super distortion

This discussion is ridiculous. You should just get two similar LP's and put one of each in. I did, and now this issue doesn't bother me...
