The shielding paint is used in the guitar cavity, and can be used to shield the pickup cavities. Some prefer to use Foil Tape, Copper Adhesive, instead of shielding paint. If you haven't already, I would check out Guitarnuts.com. There is a modification under Wiring and Shielding called "Taming The Beast". My guitar cavity is lined both with shielded paint, as well as foil tape. The pickup cavities are only shielded with foil tape, although Copper would be the best for this situation. Oh, you need to disconnect everything. You can remove your pots, or just tape them off. I would remove the wiring though, it will make things much easier.

You can shield pickups with copper foil tape you could also use aluminum flashing tape from a hardware store. First you need to solder a ground wire onto the tape and then wrap the coils with the tape. Some pickups have shielded coils some don't. I have a single coil Jackson pickup that is shielded but it doesn't make a huge difference. The hard part is getting the solder to stick to the tape.

It's more important to shield the cavity than the coil.
If you are going to use copper foil you should check that the output of the coil is taken from the blind (inner) side of the coil. If the screen is proximate to the output (signal) side of the coil there will be a noticeable loss of h/f owing to the capacitance effect created by the screen. With the output coming from the hidden end of the coil the outer windings form part of the earth circuit and the screen doesn't add any additional capacitance to the circuit.
