Shielding and Gibson-style braided cables

Re: Shielding and Gibson-style braided cables

Happy that this solved the problem!

Re: Shielding and Gibson-style braided cables

Glad you got it sorted out. Still not sure you have the pickups wired quite right (assuming they are Duncans) but someone else can take a close look.

I like to use a piece of 18 or 20 gauge buss wire to connect the pot cases rather than individual wires. It doesn't work any better than the individual wires that you used, but it's a bit neater and easier because you don't have to worry about the insulation at all. You just run one, continuous piece and form it so it's out of the way.

Attached photo just to show example of the buss wire.

Yeah I was going to use a coat hanger but I just went with what I had around. Yours is so much neater than mine!

Don't use a coat hanger. Buss wire is tinned copper. A coat hanger is some conglomeration of cheap steel and probably not very easy to solder anyway. You can use solid core wire in place of buss wire, just strip the insulation off. It's basically the same thing.

You did just fine. It's easier to keep it neat when all the wire is single conductor vintage braid like mine is.

Re: Shielding and Gibson-style braided cables

That old network cable you have under your feet with the bad end
That's usually 24 awg wire
And commonly thinned

Strip back about 4 inches
Should be plenty

Those other seven wires will come In handy on your next wiring project

Re: Shielding and Gibson-style braided cables

Forgot ... I see no green wire either. So, no green or red wire visible. Maybe the "tech" cut them both back flush with the cables outer jacket???? Or, maybe they aren't Duncans?

They are 4 conductor but installed with triple shots [emoji4]

Never used them but I suppose that would explain it. Sorry if I missed that in your initial post.

Re: Shielding and Gibson-style braided cables

Oh yea my triple shot rings have a white hot and black ground
I have four sets

On my RG2
My Ehdwuld
A set for my Gibson, I just ain't got round to
And a cream set that I just dont know about yet

Re: Shielding and Gibson-style braided cables

OK so I want to install an OOP switch now (plan to drill a hole, don't want a P/P).

I know how to wire the DPDT to reverse two wires... is it the black and white coming from one of the pickups? Do I need to join the black and shield together as well?

EDIT: Ok so I think I have figured out that to get one PUP out of phase, I need to reverse the black and white wires, but keep the shield connected. So in phase, white is hot and black+shield go to ground, OOP black is hot and white and shield go to ground. Is this correct?

Sounds right
This is what I did with a super switch on my Rg2

The switch was
Bridge
Both pickups in series and out of phase
Both pickups in parallel
Both pickups in series
Neck

I wanted the in series with each other
To simulate the nasal Tele sound
Not so much the Peter Green thing
