Shop Floor Custom

Shop Floor Custom

I've ordered through the stores. First brick and mortar, now Sweetwater. I believe anybody that sells SD pickups should be able to help you. First they give you a quote, then they order it for you.

I've always been very happy with the Custom Floor.

Re: Shop Floor Custom

Thanks! I didn't realize sweetwater did that. I hope what I want isn't a full custom shop order. I basically want a distortion or nazgul (haven't decided yet) in matte black with 2 rows of hex screws. Basically a blackened Sh-6 or Nazgul...

Re: Shop Floor Custom

Yes, you would order these directly through your local (or online) SD dealer.

Re: Shop Floor Custom

I'm sure the matte bobbins would be a simple Custom Floor thing, but the Hex screws could be a full-on Custom Shop endeavor.

Re: Shop Floor Custom

I ordered one last spring through Motor City Guitar. F spaced Duncan Custom in Parchment with one 2 screw hole leg. Wound by MJ. It's a beauty.

Re: Shop Floor Custom

Interesting that this would pop up now. Just got off the phone with a big on line dealer and he told me you guys have now cut off his floor custom orders for the Custom 8. Now that pickup has to come through the full custom shop at that full CS price so??

Re: Shop Floor Custom

Really? I thought the Blackened Black Winters are full-blown CS jobbies if you want them outside the Schecters that came with them?

I don't know about all that, but I have ordered a few double screw JBs and 59's with no upcharge.

Many changes happening at Duncan and none of them good.

Re: Shop Floor Custom

I don't have confirmation on any of this, so I wouldn't go with this info as 'this is the way things are now', unless someone who works at SD HQ confirms it.

Re: Shop Floor Custom

I've put in the my request to Sweetwater, so we shall see what price he comes back at me with.

Before I decided to give Sweetwater a shot, I called an online dealer today and he said about all he can get as shop floor customs these days is no logo, colored bobbins, and different screw & slug colors. If true, that sucks.

I had a minor issue with a Duncan I bought from one of the biggest pickup dealers on ebay. Seems the sealed box I got contained a pickup that had been soldered in before [ the zebra Perpetual Burn]. That owner because I have been a loyal customer for years personally called me within an hour of me sending him a message on it. He is the one who told me about the Custom 8 no longer being available to them as a floor custom and some other issues due to changes at Duncan over the last year or so. Trust me these guys have ordered and sold a LOT of those floor custom Custom 8's over the years so I took it seriously!! It also sounds eerily similar to what I saw first hand with Carvin back around 1998 or so when they had a big shake up as the newer generation took over.
Check into this my friend and get back to us on what s up with this. I am one because of my background ( some of which you know) who would never ever post something like this here that was simple hear say from an unsubstantiated source. The info I got has credibility in who was telling me that something is changing at Duncan so---.

Sweetwater never even got back with me on this exact same request. I wanted a shop-custom tb-6 with the nazgul look, matte black with black-nickel screws and slugs.
It's been well over a year now and needless to say I moved on long ago. They said they would submit for a quote from SD,,,,,,,,,,,,never heard back from Sweetwater on it.

To be fair I only wanted one tb-6 and that's a lot of hassle for one single unit, but I sure didn't want to make a big commitment until receiving some firm details on price and time.

There's several places online that stock many shop-floor customs and no-logos, so I'd highly suggest going that route unless you have something real specific in mind.

Shop Floor Custom

I hate to say it but it is most likely all about money. If a dealer can get a CS pup cheaper to the consumer than a direct order to the CS then why would Duncan want to let that happen?
It’s probably nothing more than good old American corporate greed. It’s running rampant these days.
