Short Scale Guitars - What Recommendations Does the Forum Have?

Hello folks, looking for a new guitar. Been playing my Gibson LP Standard a lot lately because I’ve really fallen for the shorter scale of the neck. Love the reach and effortless bends. Not loving the ergonomics and to be honest I grow pretty quickly bored with the LP tone. I’m wanting my new guitar to have a similar scale but with more modern appointments. Problem is, outside of Gibson and her copycats, Gretsch and PRS it’s hard to find instruments in this range. They have to be out there but I’m not finding them. I’m hoping I can get some leads from the collective SD community.
I have about $1500-2000 to work with. I’d prefer hard tail but I don’t get too bothered by a trem other than Floyd Rose which I really do not want. Looking for something with a more moder feel, as pretty as those old Gibsons Gretsch’s and Rickenbackers are I never feel like I can dig into them the same way I can a bolt-on.

This is where the SG comes into play...

Warmoth strat or tele with a 24.75" conversion neck.

Gibson fixed this problem in 1961. It's called the SG. Gibson just released three variants of the 1961 SG, one of which is a hardtail (not vintage accurate, FWIW), once of which is the Maestro Vibrola, and the other of which is the rare and cool sideways vibrato version (which I covet). They are priced at $2,000, and they look sweet as hell. And I say this as someone who was very down on Gibson quality and "artistic" decisions in the last 15-20 years of the Henry J. era.

This Godin Summit SG, is a great guitar, Quality of build is excellent and the price $1000, it rocks. Nice fast maple neck, with Zebra pickups.DSC00231.jpg

If you dig short scale guitars and want to try something different than Gibsons :

Fender did a few very short scale guitars :
JAGUAR : 24"
DUO SONIC : 22"5

Then the Rickenbacker 325 "Capri" (The one Lennon used before he got his Casino) is even shorter. This is scary. The smallest I can think of.

(The guitar with the shortest scale I have is an old Gibson SG Standard. At first any octave slide would end up one fret too far because I was always playing on the Strat, but I got use to it and the short neck is quite convenient for certain things).

Carvin/Kiesel have many 25" models, and they aren't hard to find on the used market,,,,,and if your priority is function (not fancy tops, dyed fretboards ect) you can go custom well within your budget.

25" is plenty close enough to G-scale for that feel, IMO.

ESP Eclipse. The ones from the 90's are bolt-ons with maple necks if that's important to you.

Kiesel is in your price range new if you limit the fancy woods.

Warmoth 24.75" conversion necks on whatever body you want.

Godin has some 24.75" models.

Reverend does too.

Right around the $1000 mark, the Warmoth seems like a good idea.

ESP LTD has a number of affordable but high-quality short-scale single-cuts in the EC-1000 range. Great appointments, great quality, and they're all somewhere in the ~$1000 range.

Re: Short Scale Guitars - What Recommendations Does the Forum Have?

Id rather buy a used ESP than a new LTD and theyre with a few hundred most times. Not to take away from an LTD because theyre great guitars, but would you rather buy a new Epiphone or a used Gibson? All in what you want though...

For floyd rose short scale Id go Kramer Nightswan or Pro Axe, or Charvel Fusion or Peavey Vandenberg even though I dont care for the necks on those much.

I'd say the Godin Belmont guitar that I have. It's an awesome piece of instrument that I bought for $525 at a pawn shop. They're around $1,000 new. It's like a cross between a Fender Stratocaster & a Gibson SG guitar. It has a Gibson scale length FB and mahogany body and neck with a rosewood FB. It's also loaded with 3 Seymour Duncan pick ups. The 2 are Tube Lipstick and a Duncan '59 in the bridge. It's a fantastic guitar for the money.:)

Fair enough, though the comparison to Epiphone/Gibson is slightly inapt to me, given the build and production issues with so many supposedly high-level Gibsons. ESPs aren't like that, by and large (probably why they haven't gone bankrupt, lol).

Also, the OP specifically said he didn't want Floyd Rose (on the Kramer et al. recs).
