Should an UNCOVERED Seth have feedback probs?

I know I know.. some of you are going to say "A covered Seth shouldn't have feedback problems if you're using it correctly blah blah blah".

My amp must be super sensitive to the Seth then, because I have an UNCOVERED Seth neck that loves to squeal when I have the gain channel switched on and I'm not playing anything. And not just the typical guitar feedback.. like, high pitched microphone type squeal.

Any reason it would be doing this? (I'm not standing directly in front of the amp facing it or anything.. I'm probably about 10 feet away facing away from the amp. )

It's un-potted... there is always a chance that you will get a microphonic one... looks like you did...

Wow.. I hope not. It's a floor shop custom Double Cream with 4 conductor wire. Took me 6 weeks to get. I hope I don't have to send it back :laugh2:

Hey Fatty

Nope, my unpotted Seth also feedbacks. Once you get past a certain level of distortion, the Seth squeals like crazy. That's what I've found. (which is why I use a potted version......much better ;) )

Pretty much ANY pickup will squeel if you play with lots of gain or have your overdrive unit cranked up or you're standing to close to or in front of or facing your amp. My '63 Strat will squeel like that. So will any of my Teles and my Les Paul with the Tom Holmes pickups. There may be nothing wrong with the pickup. Kind of like the old joke: Patient: "Doc, my arm hurts when I do this"...Answer: "Then don't do that!". Lew

Fatty, this sometimes happens with unpotted pickups under high gain or loud conditions. Gettibg the pickup wax potted is the easiest cure. Fortunately the turn around time to get the pickup potted by the SD company is pretty quick so you won't be without a pickup for too long and the problem will then be solved.

Give SD a call and get a RA number.

ditto, my JB squeals like a pig when there are situations when i HAVE TO stand close to the amp, however, when i stand 3-4 meters away, there is no squeal.

Robert's right, in that wax potting may help. But from my experience, most of these squeeling problems happen at home when guys are just playing to loud and standing to close to thier amps. Happens to me all the time. :smack: :laugh2: Lew

What difference does it really make that the Sethlover isn't waxed potted? Is there a waxed potted clone?

Before somebody mistakenly brings it up, I want to add that an A2 59 is NOT a potted Seth!!! (More like a PG with symmetrical coils)
