Should I activate my backup?

I love my Les Paul. It's my number one, and for the foreseeable future, it will be.

But I don't think my PRS SE Custom 22 gets the love it needs. At the moment, it's got a fairly versatile SH-6 set in it, able to be split, and a variety of tones are there. I'm wondering if, since I've gone somewhat classic on the LP (A2 Demon bridge, RCA3 59 neck), I should put my Blackout set in the PRS and just admit I need a more metal axe for when the mood strikes.

What say you? Go for it? Leave the wonders of the passives in place? Which way would you go?

For the record, I kind of want to have it active, but I also don't want to go to the effort of rewiring the whole thing either.

Re: Should I activate my backup?

Wait a sec, you're saying that the Distortion set in your PRS isn't metal enough?
Not that Blackouts aren't heavy, but maybe you should play it a bit more as is and see what happens.

I would stay with the passives, especially since you already have SDs in there. If you feel like this, you should first try to get your hands on a guitar with actives and try it out, before you consider modding your own guitar, people have very different thoughts about actives, some hate em, some love em.... I dont really like them, I personally would leave it as it is

Re: Should I activate my backup?

What selector switch does your PRS have? Three-way toggle, five-way blade or the old five-way rotary (wafer or PCB)?

IMO, the only satisfactory backup for a Lester is ... another Lester. The only PRS that approaches this capability is the Singlecut/SC series.

Enjoy both guitars for what they are. Vive la difference.

Re: Should I activate my backup?

If I find I am not playing a guitar, it gets sold for something I will. I don't have many instruments (for a professional), but what I own, I use all the time. I'd say either change it into something you will play, or find something else.

Re: Should I activate my backup?

I have a dedicated metal guitar. An ESP LTD H1001NT with Invaders. The rest of my axes are blues and blues rock stuff except for my RG Prestige, it'll cover anything.
I like having a dedicated metal guitar for my days I wanna chug which are few and far between these days but it's still available if I need it..

Re: Should I activate my backup?

I play all my guitars, but some more than others. I personally like to keep them no matter what, but that's just my preference. I have a couple that I'm quite sure will never see a stage, but I enjoy playing them at home anyway.

Perhaps the question should be "What does the PRS do differently for YOU?" Every guitar has its nuances... just find a niche to explore and let it take you where it takes you. I enjoy modding and upgrading my guitars, but I think I'd figure out for sure what I wanted the guitar to do for me before I started changing stuff.

Re: Should I activate my backup?

Do what you want Wizz but a pickup change is not going to make it more metal. With your gear, you can get there with almost any guitar. If it sounds good, I would leave it alone. Just pick up the damn thing and play it more.

Re: Should I activate my backup?

You know me man!!!

Buy a guitar just to put the Blackouts in :D

Don't ever be practical.
