i own a couple ibanez's geard towards hard rock and am thinking of getting something different. i was thinking about a strat or a music man axis or something, but then i was watching crossroads (the movie) last night and i though - hey, why not something real different - like a tele!

i used to think they were the lamest guitars around but as i get older, im craving less gain, a more bluesy tone.

what do you guys think? what are they like if you are used to a shred guitar? the standared teles are only $400, are they decent? are the american teles that much better?

and what the dif between alder and ash?

Re: should i buy a telecaster?

Standard teles are great with a proper setup and really well made. Mines indestructable. (It's survived 3 vaccations and quite a few thousand miles without ever getting out of tune.)

Stock pickups are great. I put rio grandes in mine and would suggest those to anyone with a tele.

Re: should i buy a telecaster?

Telecasters are one of the coolest type of guitars around. The neck may feel a little strange if your used to a shredding neck but stick with it for 2 weeks and you'll crave it.

Re: should i buy a telecaster?

One of the unique advantages of a Tele, is that if you want to try different pot, cap, or switch options, its just two screws and the whole control plate pops out. No need to disassemble, or even detune, the whole guitar.

Re: should i buy a telecaster?

Yes you should.

And you can shred on almost any guitar when it is setup properly. For Tele rock shreders you should check out Richie Kotzen.

I say get a Fender Lite Ash Telecaster. Comes "preloaded" with Seymour Duncan pickups. If it's anything like the Lite Ash Stratocaster (triple alnico II pro single coils) it will make you drool. It's got very nice vintage tone.

Big +1 to that. Those lite ash Teles are freakin' awesome

Re: should i buy a telecaster?

I say yes! Teles have a tone that I can only describe as pure. I have a MIM tele and can't put it down. Very versitile. The bridge pup is twangy in a great way, not at all like a strat bridge pup.
