Re: should i buy a telecaster?

Anyone ever taken a modern style bridge and replaced it with an ashtray style one?

I was thinking about getting a 3 barrel bridge for mine. The guitar naturally innotates pretty evenly (None of the saddles are really adjusted wacky) I just wondered if it's a straight swap? I assume it'd get more twang since the ashtrays are thinner.

Re: should i buy a telecaster?

Yes, you should get a Tele. I had a MIM Tele in the 90's but sold it because the smaller frets on them then were not for me. Since then I've wanted another one. I LOVE my '91 Am. Standard.

A Tele can do everything, and when I say everything, I mean everything. I've never owned a guitar, even the one I built, that can do as much as a Tele.

Re: should i buy a telecaster?

is there any disadvantage to the light teles?

as in Weight? I tried a new Mexican Esquire that was so extremely light ash... The wood that is in those new limited Esquire run i hear is extremely good quality ash... the guitar is light as a feather... oddly i prefer a heavier body..

Hehe, my '91 Am. Standard weighs in at 8lbs. I love it.

Hey! is that a leftie in that pic with you?! Oooops. I jammed with a leftie once and he merely put me off. I mean his fingers were all mirrored the wrong way!

Yes buy a tele....I like my highway one. Which might help make the shred transition... big frets, satin neck etc. Or take a cue from mr john 5, he a tele man of note. And a shredder. He is busy collecting teles in the style of "one from each year they were made" Now that's dedication to the tele. And so it should be.

Re: should i buy a telecaster?

A tele is not going to be for every player, however, every player should at least give one a fair shake.

And come on… making claims that a telecaster cannot be used for any style, that they do not sustain, squeals excessively, etc? Those making such ignorant remarks regarding the telecaster are not deserving of playing teles, and thus are doomed to play Ibanez RGs the rest of their lives.

<--- Yup, proud owner of a pair of teles. My #1 tele is the ’04 MIM 50s Tele with a pair of tapped QPs for tele (shown at left). I am convinced that that setup can yield positive results in any genre.

Re: should i buy a telecaster?

The telemaster albert lee always prefers light teles.

i saw Albert doing an EB Guitar Clinic a few weeks ago in my small town... a big serious storm blew in and the powere went out 3-4 times.. but after it was over i wanted a Bassman reissue and a EB Albert Lee model.... guess the sales pitch worked on me... But anyways the Albert Lee models the local store has are not that light....

I was goin by what he said in his video tape lesson thing that came out sometime in the '80's I believe. that must have such a great clinic! I'm totally envious!

Well, If you don't have a Bigsby or a vibrato, I bet you can't do the dive bomb with your Tele.

ya that was very cool..... he did a hell of a lot of story telling... maybe got 6 songs in all night and they rushed him because of the serious storm brewing out side and the power cutting on and off.. Country Boy of course was the best. Someone asked him about his model with the 3 p90's in it and he picked it up and played it for a song and it sounded so much better!!! That was great.. a P90 Albert Lee model is on my wish list big time!!!!

Albert may very well prefer extra light ash.... i just meant his signature models like many production guitars are all over the map with weights.

Albert said the guitars he was playing were loaners from the store for the clinic... He said he keeps 2-3 Albert Lee models at home in California and 2-3 in England... That way he can just fly over and do the sessions or gigs with gear he has on hand either side of the pond. But he added he could do everything with just one... but having a few is good.

Didn't Albert use a custom painted Warmoth Tele for years?

Re: should i buy a telecaster?

WRONG!

I use the tuners!

A tuner may be able to emulate the vibrator, but see if you can do it as fast and as vibrant as you use you hand. Are we talking about the same vibrato here? Anyways, you can't do it with the Tele alone.

Yes you should.

And you can shred on almost any guitar when it is setup properly. For Tele rock shreders you should check out Richie Kotzen.

...and Greg Koch. Shreddin' with a B-bender.

Re: should i buy a telecaster?

talking about using a tuner for dive bombs i saw a Canadian bar band legend named David Wilcox last winter... he was playing a hockey arena or something in a small town in Ontario... anyways i was standing side stage and he was doing a song called Bear Cat and i hear him do a dive bomb on a 50's era blond tele.... i look up and he is dropping the tuner down and back in tune in a blink of an eye... very cool trick for sure!!!! Later on thru the show i noticed he does it quite a bit!!!!! Made my jaw drop when i saw what he could do

You said dive bomb, not vibrato. You can do an vibrato by grabbing the string behind the nut.
