Should I do it?

I'm staying in New York for a couple days and was at Guitar Center noodling around with a friend. I picked up a Fender standard MIM Strat and fell in love with it. It was $450 which made me like it even more, I came really close to buying it but my friend talked me out of it saying I'd regret buying it later. Now I'm sitting in my hotel room and considering going back tomorrow and picking it up again to see if I still like it and possibly buy it. Just our of curiosity what would you guys do? Ever made a heat of the moment purchase, if so was it worth it?

Re: Should I do it?

I have made many heat of the moment purchases - and they were always worth it! :-p
Seriously though - i am not a strat player, but I have heard good things about the Mexican strats.

Re: Should I do it?

I've only played a strat one other time, great guitar with in the "Platinum Department" in my local Sam Ash so it was pretty pricey. This one played great though, I've got a Mexican tele and have no complaints about it, never been the type that needs an American made guitar.

Chances of me going back tomorrow are getting pretty high haha

Re: Should I do it?

Hey if you love it, get it.

Bet you'll love it even more when you offer em $400 cash and they take it.

Go get it. :D

Re: Should I do it?

Never thrown cash on the table for a guitar, think it'll actually cut $50 off? I'll make a stop at an ATM if thats the case

Re: Should I do it?

The current crop of MIM Fender guitars is eminently playable. I find the stock pickups, selector switches and machineheads disappointing. The weight could be lower but this is to be expected in the price bracket.

I have a mid Nineties MIM Stratocaster, a GFS Brian May style pickguard kit and two old Dimarzio BHM-1 pickups. Guess what is likely to happen when I locate a Dimarzio BHM-1 neck position pickup?

Re: Should I do it?

My bet is on you're dropping it in the strat to make the set complete.

But I'm sad to say I did not end up getting the geetar. I had a meeting in the morning and when I went back to my hotel I got a nice message that I had to check out within a half hour. For those of you that know NY, my hotel was by the sea port and Guitar Center is in Union Square, there was no way I was getting there on time before check out. I was still optimistic though and told myself I'd stop by before I left, but that changed once I had all my bags in hand and realized what a pain they would be on the subway. So I shamefully got a cab to Grand Central and was on my way. Trying to find some time later this week to pay Sam Ash a visit in hopes they may have one that finds me though.

Re: Should I do it?

Call the store, I bet they can ship it. You might even find it online at that store location if you know the zip.

Re: Should I do it?

Score the guitar... Hours, days, weeks, months of pleasure - or longer. Easily worth $400 since you've played it and enjoyed. Still, let us know!

Re: Should I do it?

Native NYer chiming in. I'd go to Rudy's, Matts Umanovs, 30th street and Dans chelsea guitars before going to GC on 14th street. But that's just me. Only those stores would do a cash on the table deal

Re: Should I do it?

I've never even heard of either of those stores, whats the cross street? And I may go get it or find another one in the price range that I connect with. I considered starting to save up to build a partscaster but when I put the numbers together it'd be a little more expensive to do that than to just swap a couple things out on the MIM strat

Great point. If we will spend $10 for a 90 minute movie ticket, what's that extrapolated to $400... 40 x 90 = 3600 minutes, or 60 hours. You'll put that on it in the first month.

Re: Should I do it?

if it feels right and inspires you get it! personally I hate strats but I love the sounds others can get out of them!

It is tough finding the right guitar...or amp and effects for that matter in this guitar world we live in so if you find something that is right then for sure invest in it whether it be a Squier or Fano whatever works!

Re: Should I do it?

Here's how I'm starting to look at it, the guitar and I will meet again if I look hard enough withut going back to NY

Re: Should I do it?

If you really like it get it! MIM Strats are really nice guitars. I have an American Standard and an MIM Standard, they're different monsters, but the MIM is comparable quality wise to my MIA.

Re: Should I do it?

Don't listen to your friend. Go and buy it. The Mexican made strats are really great sounding guitars. I used to have a 2006 Sunburst model which I had for a few years . To this day, I regret getting rid of it.

Yeah I'm pretty pissed I listened to him, should've gotten it at the moment. I cleared up my Saturday to hopefully go searching at larger stores and small local stores for one, if everything goes well I'll have a nice mexi strat by the end of the day
