Should I get a 7-string for my second guitar?

Re: Should I get a 7-string for my second guitar?

The extra string shouldn't make a difference in mastering the instrument as it's usually tuned to B it's exactly the same intervalic relationship as D is to A and A is E (4th higher/5th lower) so if you're familiar with a six string in standard it wouldn't take long to get used to an extra string and wider fretboard.
If you're familiar with drop D than drop 'A' would also be easily acclimatised to.
I love open tunings too and think ADADGAD and GDADGAD would sound incredible
IMHO getting used to a 12 string would be more challenging but only due to the wider fretboard, dual strings extra physicality required to play it

The way to overcome the 7-string adjustment issues is to try an 8-string now and then. You'll be running back to tour 7-string in full relief :)

I got a .070, i gotta try drop-G with this one + a regular 10's set, when time permits.

Or just wonder why someone would want to replace their bassist.

Imagine what you could do to the Kashmir riff, the elderly and small children would probably soil themselves

Which is why I don't own a 7 string, nor would I recommend one to someone who hasn't mastered 6 strings yet.

I agree. I've considered them, but don't really find myself having any desire to own one. Not so much from me NOT mastering 6 strings (although that's probably debatable :dunno:), but because they seem like more of a modern metal instrument to me rather than fitting well into the classic rock that I personally enjoy playing.

It's in black and white so it can't be modern lol

Yeah, but it's got 10 strings... not 7.

...and it's ugly!

I'll stick with the 10-string I already have, thank you very much! [emoji6]

Sweet guitar there Briguy.

The classical has 10 individual courses, I just wanted to indicate guitars with 6 or more courses aren't a new idea
