Should I get an electric guitar with single coil pickups or humbucker pickups?

I'm looking to buy my first electric guitar. Both options are squier bullet stratocaster, both same price of £91. One option has two single coil pickups and a one humbucker, the other option has all single coil pickups. Now a lot of people have said it depends on the music I listen to or want to play, but which one is more versatile. I listen to a lot of arctic monkeys, the strokes, the black keys a lot of post-punk music, indie rock, joy division, garage rock, the white stripes, blues rock, alternative rock. So what option would be best for me?

I'd say go for the humbucker option. I think HSS is a bit more versatile than SSS for the music you've described. If you don't like it, you can always get a new humbucker and wire it with a coil split.

Both guitars are probably routed for humbuckers under the pickguard. If you find later on that the tone is lacking somehow you can change the pickups.

You should try out many different guitars, even of the same model, and pick the guitar that you find the easiest to play and which sounds best to you. Take a more experienced guitarist with you to try them out too, if you can.

I agree with AG about the wiring options. But most of the bands you list sound like a single-coil situation to me (a little bit thin and lo-fi on the guitar sound). The thing is, it's a bullet Strat, so you probably will need to swap out some electronics to get to where you want anyway. I don't think you would go wrong with either purchase, as long as you have some budget for upgrades. If just buying the guitar is your limit, I would be inclined to advise the single coil version based on your music taste.

What amp are you running it through? That's going to make a difference also.

HSS rules for versatility. And for a squire you can try affordable Duncan designed version of the JB.

Re: Should I get an electric guitar with single coil pickups or humbucker pickups?

One possible fly in the ointment is that the Chinese pickguard is of a non-standard outline compared to the majority of aftermarket replacements.

HSS is the more practical choice.

I've put a US pickguard on a bullet before. I think there were some holes to drill but it's not a big deal.

The problem with the SSS bullet is that the bridge pickup is very thin-sounding. But if you just swap that one out, for, say, an SSL-5, then you'll be good to go.

Go HSS like other have said you will have the best of both worlds.

Re: Should I get an electric guitar with single coil pickups or humbucker pickups?

With an HSS design you could get an aftermarket humbucker with splitting capability and have an HSS that sounds pretty darn similar to an sss.

off u see did MRSAge, I m on tapa talk and auto correct is hating on me

I suggest you to buy Squier Classic Vibe 60's Stratocaster for the music you describe you like to play. later, if you want you can add the singlecoil humbucker version for the bridge
like Lil'59 or Jb Junior. i reccomend you that guitar because i have one, and pickups on it already are amazing:) and you will have no issues with pots or anything, just be sure at first, you take it to guitar luthier, to set it up correctly and with better strings. that guitar is amazing electric monster for the price;) in about 3 years of playing, that is the only guitar that the stock pickups are allright, no pot issues, no other issues. just must be set up correctly so get her to some good luthier after you buy it;) and later, if you want put on the bridge humbucker in the singlecoil version. the only guitar for that money that i didn't find anything to change or swap, tuners ok, tremolo ok, nut ok, pickups great, knobs and pots great !

But as i play a lot of heavy tapping licks it lacks some output for that kind of stuff.. so i think i will add JB Junior or Lil'59 on the bridge and anything else leave the same. but i can guarranty you that the stock pickups are allright for the stuff you're into. it are just fine pickups.

Go for an sss with single coils and if they don't do the job for you, you can get single coil sized humbuckers with you.

It does not matter which of those you buy unless you have another 120 dollars to switch the pickups out the day you get it. They are both going to sound like crap. I would say get the HSS, because it would be more versatile later. I have never liked the bullet series, I just don't think they are high enough up the chain to be seriously playable. One more price point up, and squier makes some playable guitars that you can modify. Not trying to poo-poo you choice, but I teach after school guitar classes to high school students and end up working on all their guitars. I always feel like those are more of a wal-mart novelty than an actual instrument.
