Its not that its set to from left to right but its easier to remember especialy if youv got phase switchs splits and series switchs and stuff like that. I mean All you have to remember is which way the switch is pointin.
Towards the neck means neck pickup is selected towards the bridge the bridge pickup is selected then you have the same for the pots and switchs, pot neerest the neck is for the neck and switch neerest the neck splits the neck etc.
