Re: Show me your SG's

Scored this Epi SG Custom used for a good price last November. I'm in the midst of changing the pickups, pots, caps & switch and rewiring it.

Whoever thought of putting an orange switch tip on these? It looks like a clown's nose...

My first really good guitar was a '74 walnut SG Standard. That's me down there on stage in 1980  ....

That orange switch tip is bizarre; why not black to match the PU rings? I had an issue with that pale yellow color they used, and waited patiently for Epi to introduce a milk white SG Custom, which they finally did, and with a maestro to boot. Scooped one up, it's gorgeous!

Re: Show me your SG's

Great pic, Simon! Any idea what song you guys were playing at that moment? :)

Well, judging by the F sharpish chord I'm playing it could be any of:

  • Deadline - a critique of tabloid journalism ("Dead end body on another street, Lying cold at reporter's feet")
  • Ten Years - my assessment of the nuclear-political situation in 1980 ("We're living in the doorway of 1984. The future, salute her, it's what you're living for")
  • Judas - The Iscariot story ("Grabbing gold for the life of a friend, can't you see it's a means to your end")
It absolutely could not be Don't Jump ("You look so silly on that window ledge, a gust of wind and you'll go over the edge"), which never featured an F# chord of any kind.

Every one a classic. They really don't write 'em like that any more. :)

My guess is the spec was "amber", like an aged nicotine-stained cream one (plenty of SGs have a cream switch tip with black switch surround), and somewhere along the line "amber" either got misinterpreted or very cheaply made!

I had an issue with that pale yellow color they used...

Banana Milkshake! It is a diversion from the original Gibson but I can live with it.

Just been looking on the Epi web site. I can't see that one. Got any pics?

Banana milkshake, I like that.

The alpine white (arctic white?) SG Custom is only carried by a chain or two, and not part of Epi's "regular" line. There's a picture of one on the 'Everything SG.com' site, under Epi models. Beautiful guitar. Looks just like the Gibson SGC's.

I've emailed Epiphone Customer Service & asked that they make a 3 PU SG with a HB/P-90/P-90 and a 5-way, which is how the Custom should have been decades ago. A neck P-90 is a great thing.

My buddy has an Epi with that switch, and as hideous as it is, I am actually starting to grow fond of it. Looks like something that needs to be popped.

Am I the only one in complete and utter awe over these. You can pretty much die at any moment. Very nice indeed. Here's my beater. Not the best shot, but she don't get any prettier the closer you look.

Thanks!! I'm guessing your pic is hosted on Photobucket? My work blocks that site.. :(
