Shredable neck pup for LP to match Distortion b. - with some versatility

Re: Shredable neck pup for LP to match Distortion b. - with some versatility

The Super 2 is not really like the Distortion neck, no.

Re: Shredable neck pup for LP to match Distortion b. - with some versatility

Thanks but I have an evo set in my Ibanez and while the neck is very close to what I'm looking for, I'd like to get a different pickup this time. I think it's probably the ceramic in that neck that keeps it from sounding "perfect" to me. I guess this means I should go for an alnico 5.

What do you guys think out of these 3?
Paf pro
Liquifire
Full shred

Leaning toward the liquifire at this point to get a modern sound, but with no back to back comparison videos it's hard.

Re: Shredable neck pup for LP to match Distortion b. - with some versatility

Two are powerful, two are bright and I can't come up with anything in common exclusively between the LiquiFire and the Full Shred at the moment, other than that I would choose neither to be paired with an SH-6 in a Les Paul.

Update: Liquifire bought! Found a used one, just gotta put it in a gold cover when it arrives.

Thanks guys!

Eddit: whoops the comment about the lp hurt...

Edit2: cancelled the order

If it isn't too dark for your taste due to the single cutaway and shorter scale then you'll be just fine.

Screamin' Demon is an excellent neck pickup for pairing with a hot bridge. Great lead voice. Retains definition at gain, also cleans up well. Very underrated in neck position IMO.

Re: Shredable neck pup for LP to match Distortion b. - with some versatility

Guess who's got 2 thumbs and cancelled the liquifire order?

So what pickups should I be looking at that will go well in the LP and go along with the distortion bridge, and be good for shred? Trying to pare the list down.

Thank you for the screamin demon rec; I'll check it out too.

The Sentient is modern and versatile.

Thanks - I wonder how this would compare to the full shred given it's a lower output alnico 5. You mentioned the full shred earlier; which of the 2 would you recommend, given the lp and distortion brodge?

Thank you

I have a Full Shred. Great pickup for mid and high-gain rhythm and lead. Great match with a Screamin' Demon, but will be underpowered against an SH-6.
Disagree, I have a Fullshred neck and a Distortion Bridge in my Charvel and I think these two can balance nicely and also make for a versatile combo. I actually like the full shred neck a lot for anything from clean to high gain and anything in between.

The Sentient is more modern sounding, and not as bright as the Full Shred. There is still some bass there. I think overall, the Sentient does more things well.

Well that sounds pretty good. Now I need to find out whether this beats out Dimarzio's options but it sounds like the top Duncan.

PS why not the black winter neck over the sentient, other than the magnet? It is ceramic but gets good reviews for cleans - just wondering as it has some extra output which I would assume would go well with the distortion bridge.

Once again, why not just go with the SH-6n? It's output and tone have complemented the SH-6 for years.
Don't fear the ceramic.

Re: Shredable neck pup for LP to match Distortion b. - with some versatility

The Sh6n is actually a good match for the Sh6 bridge. Hence, the mayhem set. All pickups mentioned so far will work, the liquifire/Crunch Lab were made for Petrucci some years back, after that came the Illuminators set for him.

The Paf Pro & Super2 would have worked as well. Gravity storms, Transitions, Paf Joe, Titan etc too

Depends on what you want to do. Do you want the neck pickup to be as saturated as the bridge pickup? Or do you want the neck to be as loud as the bridge but stay clearer when switching between the two or by rolling the volume knob? Thats where the Paf Pro & Super2 suggestions came from Dimarzio I think, the Super2 is more saturated than Paf Pro.

The Black Winter, Sentinent, Distortion N, Full Shreds, etc work as well, depends on your use.

I'm really tempted as it seems the natural choice, but I have read both that it has bad cleans and can be dark. I have seen threads praising the bw neck so I was leaning there, then got many replies here about a lot of different choices. Hard to figure out what one is the right one. I think I want both high output and also some ability to get clean and maybe the 6n won't do the second part as well as some other pickups. I am not sure though. Have you tried the bw or sentient to compare?

Are you in the U.S.? If so, you could make use of Duncan's 21 day return policy and just try it out.

FWIW, DiMarzio has a similar exchange policy.

We've failed to mention that you can put also put a JB in the neck (Steve Stevens, anyone?).

I'd love to see some demos of the BW or Distortion Neck being used for shed and/or an example of an artist or recording.

Again, I love the Full Shred with any amount of gain. Cleans not so much unless you have a dark, bass-heavy guitar. With enough gain you can achieve saturation with any pickup. The problem arises when you want the same amount of saturation without resorting to using a massive amount of gain. When there is an appreciable difference in output between the bridge and the neck, you run the risk of one sounding muddy using the same amount of gain on one extreme, or a lack of saturation on the other.

As far as the Black Winter vs the Sentient...
they are both good, and can both do many things well. I don't find the Sentient as compressed, though.
