Shredable neck pup for LP to match Distortion b. - with some versatility

Re: Shredable neck pup for LP to match Distortion b. - with some versatility

The DDn was too dark for my taste, it is punchy yes but not versatile IMHO, also it was an alder body + maple neck. I have never owned a LP but some say neck can bee boomy in LPs so a dark-ish neck pickup in a potentially boomy guitar... just be sure you can use the 21 day exchange and depending of your results with the DDn then you can choose something else to try to compensate if needed. For me the DDn was great for metal but nothing else really.

Now the Titan intrigues me but I can not find any non-djent vids on youtube. I like periphery but I am a bigger thrash or shred fan and player. Has anyone here played a neck Titan for non-djent?

edit: found this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5RL_CO6dLw at the end the neck solo sounds pretty decent (hard to compare with the axe fx 2 and only 1 pickup set used)
edit 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTTdT626_gs well not the best playing but the tone sounds clear and full enough

Edit 3: are they going to be clear (not muddy) when illuminators wouldn't be? I see they're pretty different pickups so maybe there is a known difference in mud factor.

After researching this all day (again) it looks like I'm coming down to the Titan or Illuminator. I love Petrucci's sound so as long as it's not going to be too dark in my lp I'd like that. If not, I'll probably get the Titan. What do you guys think?

Re: Shredable neck pup for LP to match Distortion b. - with some versatility

The JP13 has a 25.5" scale, has a 24-fret bolt-on neck and pretty radically sculpted horns. Only slightly brighter than the LiquiFire, I don't think the Illuminator is a good choice.

Other pickups more suited for an LP would be the Dominion, Transition or PAF Joe, but I don't think they are as shred worthy.

The safest bet is the PAF Pro.

I think that you are going to drive yourself crazy if you over think your decision too much more.

You're absolutely right.

Thank you all so much for all the advice, I just love this forum. Now, time to decide...

Well tomorrow morning I'll decide ;)

UPDATE: PAF Pro ordered! I'm going to get a matching gold cover and install it next week when it arrives (my LP has gold hardware). I've never installed a cover before but I'll follow the youtube videos.

I'll let you know how it goes! Thanks again

PS: Considering NOT getting a cover, as I ordered a cream pickup. What do you think, http://d2ydh70d4b5xgv.cloudfront.ne...om-japan-d54bff67e54b9c155ccd8bd81d9b1460.jpg with the neck pickup as an uncovered cream? (bridge is gold covered). Maybe it'll look alright..

Shouldn't matter if its okay with you. The pafpro has double hex screw rows, so the covers would need to be specific to it with double row of holes. It may still not match but who cares anyway as long as the rest of the guitar is clean, shiny & reflecting light lol

Whoa good save, I was looking at regular covers for it. I think I'll pop it in and see if I can live with it uncovered

Update! I ended up getting a Dimarzio Titan neck, and it's awesome!

I had ordered the paf pro but the seller said they were on back order, so I thought it over again and cancelled and went with the Titan.

Anyways the Titan is both fat and non-muddy, which is a surprising combo. Like it is NOT a crisp pickup, it is very smooth - but it retains definition between notes. Like I would say the Distortion is like shark teeth between notes, and the 490R is like just one swamp of sound, and then the Titan is like a keyboard, very full notes, but each one is kept in its own tonal area.

Until I adjusted its height and the screws a bit, I didn't think it would go very well with the super crisp and sharp Distortion bridge. Luckily with raising the screws facing the neck and basically keeping the ones facing the bridge flat, it sounds perfect. It also keeps up with the Db in output in the neck position.

And the middle position with the neck vol rolled down approximates a mid output bridge pickup to my ears, with a tad extra warmth. I really dig the middle position on this thing, with the vol back a hair. It's kind of like the sound I heard on the youtube vids of Custom bridge pickups, though I haven't had a Custom myself.

This thing is great for fast notes but it really excels on bends. It sings. As a complement to the Dn, it really ties the room together, as some dude once said.

The cleans are quite a step back from the Pearly Gates neck; it sounds like a ceramic neck for cleans to me. Similar to my Evolution, though easier to keep from getting distorted. Just not much charm to the cleans. But - that's not why I bought it. It does what I wanted it to - melt faces.

Anyways thanks for your help, sorry I had to choose just one in the end but I learned a lot by looking at your suggestions
