*sigh*, i need a new amp, soundclip inside

drew_half_empty

Looking for Real Life
well, neither the bassman or the hrdx is loud enough, and given i have limited shops around here, well, heres the tone i'm going for, minus the creappy crappy mic, try to hear thru it

http://members.cox.net/badqualitymusic/sample.wav

this is on the hot rod with my modded blues driver, um, gain is maxed, tone is straight up the middle, volume is at about 1/4

the 'rods volume is at about, well, just over 1, bass at 12 (i really do wish it had more bass than that), mid 4, treble 6, presence 6, bright switch on

my tele (basswood, 59 bridge, rosewood fretboard) string gauge is 10-52 dean markley

basically i want this sound at much higher volumes, and i'd like more bass at my disposal, as you can...hear...it's much more chunky than buzzy, which is partially due to the speaker, which by nature is MUCH less buzzy & more chunky than a v30

umm, i'd like the amp to be about 100 watts, not marshall, and cost either a grand or less, just a head, no combos

so, any reccomendations?

Re: *sigh*, i need a new amp, soundclip inside

I know you said no Marshalls, but sounds to me like a Bluesbreaker goosed with a ped would give you what you are looking for.....after all they were modelled on the original Bassmans.

May also look into a MESA F-50...you can get a similar tone on channel 2 without the contour kicked and some tone controls tweaking. Heads are right around a grand, and they are SUPER LOUD..loud as most 100 watt heads. Shake your guts to mush loud. F100 is even louder obviously but will run ya over a grand.

And you get a better Fender clean than most Fenders w/ the F series :D

Perhaps some of the Peaveys will do what ya want too...XXX, e.g.

Another thing. Have you thought about running it into some 15" speakers?

Re: *sigh*, i need a new amp, soundclip inside

no, i love the speakers im using now

but i am HIGHLY considering an xxx

what are the cleans on them like?

other choices would be a dual recto, 5150 1, i dunno, maybe some other mesa, but i've tried rectoverbs and REALLY don't like them, so

Re: *sigh*, i need a new amp, soundclip inside

Check out the JSX.....there's a guy on the HC forums posting killer clips of that amp.

What's the aversion to Marshalls?
100w may be overkill bro...
A good friend of mine has an Ampeg VL501. I was just playing through it last night... killer tone. Not the best, but I was able to tweak quite a few sounds out of it from mild break up, to low heat OD, to screaming thumping metal. It's been like that every time I've played through it, and that's always through his old A/DA split stack cabs. Not the best cabs in the world.

He wants to sell it man, $400... I have no need for it, my Framus more than handles anything I need to tackle and I don't have the room. But, it may be just what the doctor ordered for you.

Understand, just saying that it might get you the low end you are looking for :)

IMO, pretty bland..a touch better than the 5150, but again IMO thats' not saying much. Classic series from Peavey have the best cleans.

other choices would be a dual recto, 5150 1, i dunno, maybe some other mesa, but i've tried rectoverbs and REALLY don't like them, so

F- series sound nothing like the Rectos for the most part (you CAN get recto-ish with using the contour if you wish though)...they are more geared towards the MKIII/MKIV sounds (tighter low end and mids, less fizz on top, less "sag" because they use a SS rectifier) but with a super sweet clean channel, which rivals any Vintage Fender I've experienced.

One thing I'm learning about MESA is that even though they have a ton of amps, they all have a unique personality, while still being a MESA. The Maverick doesn't sound like Recto. The LoneStar doesn't sound like a F series. The MKIV doesn't sound like the Nomad. Yet they all sound "Mesa-ish". They are unique amps..meaning they all have a unique voice. None of them sound the same really...like say Peaveys, or many of the Marshalls, Randalls, etc.

In fact a Maverick may be your thing too...medium gain amp...fenderish in vibe...but tighter. I came really close to buying it (it was all beat on the outside and the shop only wanted 5 bills for it). Would make a great blues/blues rock amp and goosed it would do what you require as well.

Re: *sigh*, i need a new amp, soundclip inside

i just don't like marshall or the way they do business, sorry

also on voodooamps they have a GREAT sounding modded double recto, HOWEVER, its still too buzzy for my tastes, i need more chunk than buzz, and these seem like they'd be perfect...if they were the exact opposite

I guess i need a sorta do it all amp, classic crunch, hi gain, and good cleans for pedals.

...I suppose i could always have jeff mod the xxx

Re: *sigh*, i need a new amp, soundclip inside

Having owned an XXX modded by Voodoo (I didn't like it all that much) I dunno if it'd be the right amp for you. Strangely enough I think the JSX may be more your type. The crunch and lead channels are great and the cleans were REAL good, with miles of headroom. However you seem to like that Fendery sound.... hmmm. Maybe if you got lucky a used Maverick would be your thing. I've tried those amps and they're a blast to play.

Does anyone know if they make head versions of Fender Twins?

Hey, that's cool... just wondering.

Given what you're alluding to as far as tone and capability, maybe you should suck it up, save up, and drop some change on something like a Framus Dragon...

Mesa, Peavey, and their ilk aren't even in the same league.

Re: *sigh*, i need a new amp, soundclip inside

well after the head i still need to get a 4x12

given i still got tax returns & a check commin, which will put me up to a total of 1200, but i planned on using a large portion of it to buy a cab

Re: *sigh*, i need a new amp, soundclip inside

Why are you set on a 4x12? You already have a 2x12, why not just pick up a 2nd one and stack 'em up?

Re: *sigh*, i need a new amp, soundclip inside

Slap a piece of wood on the back... save yourself some cash man. You could also rig it up so that you can take the back off if you want (have it held on with clasps that you can undo and just pull it off)

Re: *sigh*, i need a new amp, soundclip inside

I still can't see how neither of those amps are "loud enough". What kind of situations are you playing in that you need that much volume? If you're having to compete with a loud drummer, tell him to chill out and not hit so hard. I've NEVER heard anyone complain that a HRD is not loud enough.

Re: *sigh*, i need a new amp, soundclip inside

hm, not bad

none of the clips are really my style but thats to be expected

i may just have to make the drive & go check em out

Re: *sigh*, i need a new amp, soundclip inside

that sounds kinda a lot like a Peavey 5150 if im honest (though the 5150 is little more defined, a little tighter with just a touch more clarity). ive tried many marshalls and it sounded nothing like a marshall imo. but i love marshalls ive been the proud owner of an avt150 for 3 years and im getting a boutique company handmade hotrodded 12w jcm800 in a week. go for a 5150, they sound great, it will blow your head off, it will kill everyone in the crowd at a gig if you turn it up past 5. ( i use mine at about 2 with my band ) also i do believe thier selling for really cheap at the moment. try to get the original since the 5150II is more expensive and not as good. id also like to add that a 5150 imo sounds much more lively and wonderfull and awesome than a XXX and is closer to the sound than a Jsx, though ive no doubt the Jsx has the best clean channel. 100watts is overkill for a valve amp i think. i have 120watts and im thinking of just poppong out 2 of those 6l6's and running it at 60 watts (only 3db less overall volume than a 120watt amp but its easier to get the poweramp valves cooking). a 1.2w valve amp is about 1/4 the volume of a 120w valve amp. so you dont really need 100 wats if you understand where im going

Re: *sigh*, i need a new amp, soundclip inside

...actually, 120 watts would be twice as loud as 1.2

question about the 5150, as far as the cleans go, are there totally different preamps for each? Like, is the distortion channel just the clean channel with a gain stage or 5, or are they totally seperate preamps?

cuz if they're totally different i could have the clean channel made into a hot rod clone, and then get exactly what i want & then some
