Sight reading help?

Re: Sight reading help?

I find being able to recognize rhythmic patterns (cells) in small steps is a great way to build up your sight reading skills.

I am not familiar with the book that FrankAxtell suggests, I would also suggest a book along those lines. If I can find the books I've used (which have helped me), I will post the titles.

Also, I find it helps to rid yourself of tabs for a while. Get a book of jazz standards, and learn to play the standard melodies for songs like Softly in a Morning Sunrise, Autumn Leaves, and a couple of other standards. Even if you aren't sight reading initially, I find the act of learning from sheet music rather than tab is a fundamental step in the right direction.

Join a jazz band with no prior knowledge on how to play bass, and suffer for a year trying to make heads and tails of the little marks. You will be pro in no time.
