silly amp question (AC30)

Re: silly amp question (AC30)

My AC30 is probably my favorite amp, but it bugs me that it's by far the noisiest. Makes me wonder if there's an amp out there that does everything the AC30 does, but more quietly.

it will make you forget there ever was a vox

Re: silly amp question (AC30)

no, better. tony designed the hand wired ac30 for korg and its a great amp but he obviously kept some tricks to himself

Might I add as far as I know he uses better quality components in his amps too but don't quote me on that.

My Alamo 77+7 will make you forget their ever was a vox too.
I played it last night and the chime is almost incredible. Its a different sound then the beautiful bassy galssiness of my '59 bassman clone- .. The Vox "Chime" from the Alamo is "shiimery" i guess you could say-
You dont need a Vox to get chime necessarily IMO. You just have to find the right amp . I was playing thr Alamo through a 4x12 G12m cabinet.
It defintily toatlally destroyed the Vox I played at Guitar Center- the new ones. I couldnt even figure out waht they meant by chime when I palyed it there,

Haveing stated that, I dont know what the old Vox amps sounded like but the AC30 Chinese I played at the GuitarCenter absolutely blew compared to my vinateg 60's Alamo.

everything is top notch. it isnt built to a price point or anything like that, its just built be a kick ass amp

Only $2,500 - $3,500 a pop!

*gulp*

the best usually isnt cheap :)

The Mojave Sidewinder kicked my butt... not an AC30 exactly, but what is?

http://www.mojaveampworks.com/index.php?id=11,0,0,1,0,0

Lots of AC30 inspiried amps out there like the Z's and I keep hearing about these Hayseed's... http://www.valvetechamps.com

But how many of 'em really have that "thing" that magical thing?

When you find that "thing" in a 10-15 watt box drop a line...

the sidewinder is like a big coyote which i got to play once. very cool amp but not very vox like. its like there are two parallel channels that get joined up before the pi. a bass and a treble with independant volumes, a cool design thats quite different than anything ive tried. ive not heard a dr z that sounds like an ac30 but i havent heard even half his line up. never tried a hayseed and havent heard much about them. alot of the vox sound is due to the alnico blue speakers which are loud as hell so even a 15w thru a pair of those is gonna be pretty loud, maybe just perfect though.

Re: silly amp question (AC30)

Yeah... the Alnico Blues do make a difference... that forward midrange, but I think an AC30 still sounds pretty 'right' with Greenbacks.

The Mojave I played was going through an open back 2x12 w/Alnico Blues... for whatever that's worth. I can't remember which Z's I've played... I can't keep the models straight, but one of the first was a 2x12 combo w/EL84's and a cut control, it got really dirty really quick... speaking of which...

What IS the Vox sound?

I traded a VHT Pitbull for my AC30 & got it from a guy who was pretty well into the hard rock thing, said he recorded with it a little... for the clean chime but otherwise never found a use for it. When I went into NYC to do the deal... he played the Pitbull, and I remember plugging one of his MusicMans... I think an EVH into the AC30... jumped the channels and put the volumes up about half-way...

The look on the face of this guy & his buddy... they said they had never heard such a tone come outta the thing!

Of course... it's also REALLY loud at that point... like really REALLY loud!!!

It'll sterilize 'ya.

hahahaha

Re: silly amp question (AC30)

Yeah, I gotta say the greenbacks actually sound better than the Blues. I A/B'd the two when I bought mine and the Greenbacks just had a tighter feel and seemed a little punchier. The Blues... they felt a little dull to me in the bass response, not dull in bass, just not as tight. Just differant strokes, right?
