Simple Amp, opinions wanted

I'm thinking of a simple 5 knob amp, vol, treb, mid, bass and reverb. Deep switch and bright switch. Hi/Lo inputs Classic american surf tone.

Is there a market for it? :usa1:

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

Scott - I suggest that the reverb knobs consist of the following:

Mix
Dwell
Sweep

Just like my little jimi and Magnatone's old school reverb box, the old Fender tried, but failed to copy.

Think - Les Paul vibe

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

Oh, I think there's a market.

It would be cool to have the 'simple' amp setup, but I admit I'd love to have some 'classic American Surf' tone but with effects loop and switchable output.

That said, if I was in the market, I'd still go for a good sounding 'classic American Surf'-esque amp even if has the 'simple' setup-probably much more reliable than a 30 or 40 year old amp. I'd especially go for it if it's PTP...

I'm GAS'ing already!! ;)

What wattage are you thinking?

You know what would be seriously cool, and totally unique? A STEREO tube amp! Tube pre-amp, fx send, stereo fx return, and a power amp that can either run stereo or parallel mono. Head or 2x12 combo.

And here's the kicker: have one side of the power amp run 6L6's, and the other side run EL34's! Or put a switchable bias on both, so the user can decide: all 6L6, all EL34, or half and half.

If you've ever heard someone play with two different amps, and how MASSIVE their tone is, you'll understand the appeal of something like this.

Sorry, just brainstorming.

I'll take the simple one without the bells and whistles...less is usually more. That 1x12" 35 watt blonde Vibrolux that was built for one year was an idea that Fender never really followed up on back in the day and it was a great amp. Add single knob BF reverb, a beefier OT, and a slightly larger pine cab and you have a nice compact giggable amp at a reasonable cost. If you added a tone stack defeat or a adjustable NFB pot on the back panel, you have the overdrive option covered...

That'd be a great idea, but I'm sure the reason most amp manufacturers don't want to do it is because of cost. Very few have tried going this route, one being the Mesa Road King (which had a ridiculous number of options). Usually the less going on, the purer and sweeter the signal is. I can't deny it would be a great way to stand out from the crowd however.

Well, the Trace Elliot Velocettes which became the Gibson Goldtones had two knobs; Volume and Tone and they managed to do pretty well.

I think the bottom line is that as long as the amp doesn't suck and has good tonal qualities to it musicians and players are willing to deal with less knobs. Personally, I know one of the reasons I dig my Trace is because I spend less time eyeballing knobs and more time just cranking it up and playing.

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

It also sounds like a great platform for those using pedals for their OD.

I would definatly be interested if you had some knobs for tweaking the reverb, what kind of headroom are we talking about here? what tubes?(6L6's I am guessing) No master is nice, I like that too. This sounds very interesting.

Thats why I am interested, also because the clean american surf tone is awesome.

EDIT: Just saw Statman's post. That would be wicked.

Definitely don't make the Road King! To clarify, I'm talking about a SINGLE CHANNEL amp that has a stereo power amp. Basically, the perfect amp for effects junkies!

Now that I think about that. That would be amazing.... It really would be perfect for effects junkies(which is something I am, I love pedals)

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

I like the Vol, tone, and reverb-I've not really gotten into bright and deep switches. Usually, I pick one and leave it-so do that and it's even simpler for you do make, cheaper to produce.

I'd love a Dr. Z carmen ghia with reverb for example. There are so many amps I'd like, but in my house, reverb adds so much.

hell-chuck a reverb in your franklin w/6L6's, keep it under 40 pounds and we can start talking. I'll take that 20 dollar table dance from Jeff and start my savings!

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

Scott-

Make it 15-20 watts and I'd definitely go for it if I could scrap the cash together.

Low wattage is the way, boys. Let the soundman make it loud for you.

I think including spring reverb is a real plus. Seems like a master volume needs to be included...or some sort ability to create overdrive. People seem to expect that these days. A deep switch and bright switch wouldn't be needed for me...but a deep and bright switch might be handy for tailoring the amp to specific players. Instead of a bright switch I'd rather see a prescence control.

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

it'd be cool. give it some headroom and make it sound good with pedals. what class? what tubes (6l6 or 6v6 i assume)? it'd be really cool. maybe a freakin sweet tremelo on it? you could make a copy of an old valco amp, just brainstorming.

ratherdashing's idea sounds too complicated. just use a wireless transmitter and find a transmitter with two outputs for the box? it'd cost a lot less and sound better. or you could do it up italia mondial style and have stereo outputs.

i love that idea for the mondial classic with the two outputs. one for piezo and one for hums. two guitar bugs, one hooked up to the PA and one hooked up to a clean amp maybe with a dist pedal in front for easily switchable dist.

i think that would be pretty sweet
