Simple Amp, opinions wanted

Jeff, unfortunately, you're going to be waiting a while man. Sorry.

Yeah, but a guy can dream. :yell: I'll still opt for an Edana when your wait time clears up.

Me thinks less is more...sometimes. Versatility is a bonus, but if you can squeeze tone out of a few knobs, I think it would be much more novel...FWIW

I think the amp I've made so far that sounds the best is the Franklin (Lightning style). 4 knobs. Vol, Bass, Treb, Master

The hilarious thing is that I've sold a bunch of Edana's and Tweed's but not one Franklin. It's the best sounding amp I make and no one has wanted one so far! :) :smack: :laugh2:

Go figger!

That's just plain weird to me... I've only listened to the "Trinity 15" clips, but it's hard to believe no one out there wants that tone! I love it, but there are a couple of other classic amp sounds that I want first (18 Watt Marshall and perhaps a BF Deluxe Reverb).

Maybe you need to host a "focus group" ;) :no1:

Jeff needs one, he just doesn't know it yet...

I think you are indicative of most. You love the tones, but you'd rather pick up an 18 watter or a DR first. Everyone has their priorities and I'd reckon more people feel like you do. I'm digging mine though. I had that Clapton DVD going Sunday, banging out some serious Cocaine tuneage. My tone was killing EC's. :) His playing was killing mine unfortunately.... :laugh2: :smack: :fingersx:  :yell:

Scott, I want you to build a Franklin or a BF Deluxe Reverb style amp for me, unfortunately I can't afford it at the present time. :grumble: :17:

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

I need to set up some 0% financing like the car dealers! :)

Guys, I'm not complaing. I'm about as happy today as I've been in a very long time. I'm getting caught up on my wait list and now I can build some stuff that I want to build. Life is going pretty well right now.

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

I, too, would be interested in a "better" BF DR. I really like the Trinity clips, too and just can't decide if I'd be happy with an EL-84 amp. I'd almost like a channel switching BF DR style amp that switches between 6v6s and el-84's.

So much for simple...

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

I'm currently in the process of saving up/selling my Marshall combo so that I can afford a Vox AC15 re-issue. I'd definitely consider something from yourself (it'd cost more I know) but due to being in the UK, it's not really an option :(

Not entirely true...

What I really would like is a 5W Franklin with 'verb.
Of course, I can't justify the price for the amount of use it would get (unless you can get the low output).

I love the clips I've heard of the Franklin. I'm no amp afficiando by any means, so it's hard for me to describe what I really want. I like the Vox models in the POD, but I've never had the pleasure of playing the real deal. When I played the Johnson amp when it was first released, the only model I liked was the Matchless "Solo Gain." Again, I haven't had the pleasure of playing a real Matchless, though.

I'm not a fan of Marshall amps. Soooo, I don't see an Edana in my future.

As I've said before, I really don't need much output. My current setup uses a 30w Hartke Bass combo (SS) for a monitor. My POD signal is direct to the board.

Of course, for a discount price.....:usa1: ;)

scott i love the look of that stained poplar franklin and maybe if i can get the cash saved up i'll come callin, and from the clips ive heard it sounds good to me.

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

How does Franklin handle low volume? Does the overdrive still sound good?

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

I think there's a market, my 18 watter only has a volume and a tone, I think the tone knob on it's own is kind of uselss, I wish there was a way it could be turned into a mid boost instead of just bleeding off treble (leave the bass and treble basically flat and let me adust the mids - which is what most people hear - to suit my tastes based on the room I'm playing).

The master is probably the most useful one I"ve tried so far. I think you lose a little low end when you crank the gain and keep the MV low. I play it two ways.

One is I crank both gain and MV and use my guitar to tweak the tone and volume. Or, alternative, I just crank the MV up way high and just use the gain(vol) to adjust to taste. The cleans are actually my favorite thing about this amp. Eveyone goes ga-ga about the distortion, but the cleans (limited as they may be) are gorgeous.

I was playing a 5E3 I finished up last night for a guy and it was the same way. Cranked it and used the guitar to get the vol/tone I was after.

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

Scott, I tried the CUT control you'd asked about on my Matchless SC-30 this morning just to refresh my memory. I haven't plugged into this amp for a few months.

Turning the CUT control down reduces bass and brings up the treble and it does work on both channels.

I seem to like it set at about 2/3 down...or about 1/3 up. The pointer of the knob doesn't have numbers but if there were numbers I probably set it at about 10:00 or a little higher.

I don't know how it works. I'd have to open up my amp and see.

It sounds way to bassy and there's not enough highs full up...but at about 11:00 or lower the amp starts to sound the way I like it to and it seems to get toothier as I turn it down more.

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

Lew if you look up the lightning layout, the MV is about the same as on the DC30. Basically, it's almost like what Bruce does with the concentric dual pot MV mod he does.

Actually, I was assuming the cleans were good regardless. I really love the sound clips I've heard. I'm just trying to figure out how I could use the Franklin without dramatically increasing our stage volume.

My only concern with using the guitar volume to control the sound is that most pickups don't really "produce" well until about 7 or 8 on the GTR volume. I guess I'm just gonna have to try a Franklin one day to see for myself.

The question is when and how.:(

I know you like to keep things simple, but a 2-channel footswitchable amp would REALLY be easy to work in....;)

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

The whole reason I think a lot of people stray away from the Franklin is the wattage Scott. I apologize if this comes off the wrong way, but 18w and lower wattage amps are novelty items. When you're in a gigging situation, there is no way you can be heard over a decently loud drummer. You're forced to mic it and not every venue you come across will have those kind of options.

The Edana is your most popular because it's 50w and it's based off of a Marshall JTM-45 which musicians know is an amp that has proven itself over time. It's been on countless recordings and always cuts through the mix, so it should be no surprise why so many musicians go to it.

I really want to hear some recordings of your Vox AC-30 inspired amp ;)

I think ultimately you should build what you believe in yourself Scott and everything else will fall into place :) I, for one, support you doing a barebones, no frills, 5 knob amp.

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

Chris, you're probably dead on. You can always turn down an amp, but it's difficult to get more headroom and volume out two EL84's. Especially for the money.

Good point. And no need to apologize. I need honest feedback. That's the only way I'll get any better.

Re: Simple Amp, opinions wanted

After all that nonsense I posted, I remembered that the Fly Deluxe has a master volume on it.:smack:

There goes the pickup argument. Now if I could just convince my better half of the need for a $1000 amp....
