Simple Wiring Question

Hey folks, hopefully this is an easy one for you.

I'm working with this diagram to install my new hot rails
http://www.seymourduncan.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/SCHSCHSCH_5W_1Vpp3SPL_2T.jpg

I'm just figuring out all the pole positions of the switch. Have it worked it out correctly, in assuming the tone controls in Positions 1-5 are only going to affect the bridge/middle pups? From what I can see, position 5 (neck only) has no active connection to either tone control.

Can this be modified by moving the connection for Tone 2 (the middle red) terminal to the "neck black" terminal? Is this even advisable?

Cheers!

edit: The reason for asking is I'm coming into this Strat build as a life-long SG player, so I'm used to have a neck tone control. If this is highly atypical on Strats, please let me know :-)

Re: Simple Wiring Question

Welcome to the forum.

You are correct to assert that;
1) the SD schematic diagram illustrates a circuit with no connection between the neck position pickup and the tone controls.
2) moving the connection for Tone Pot #2 along by one terminal will achieve what you desire.

On vintage specification Stratocasters, it is the bridge position pickup that has no tone control.

The real problem with your chosen schematic diagram is that it is a victim of the 2015 design overhaul. The graphic/layout designers know how to construct web pages in HTML but not all of them know how to proofread the electronic information content.

Re: Simple Wiring Question

Thanks for the reply and the welcome :-)

What's the issue with the wiring diagram? I'm not new to soldering or anything, just new to the guitar side of it, which is probably why I didn't notice anything wrong.

If it's just the tone control issue that's fine with me, but if there's a bigger issue with it I'd like to get it sorted before I fry something on my first job!

P.S. Is this diagram (older SD) the "acceptable" ones? From what I can tell the only difference is the Tone pots wiring.

Re: Simple Wiring Question

The pre-overhaul diagram follows the vintage convention of no tone control on the bridge/Treble pickup.

On your chosen circuit, the modern Fender convention of the middle and bridge pickups sharing the lower Tone pot is not possible with the two-pole, eight contact switch. (The auto coil split occupies the second pole.)

I agree with your proposal to have the upper Tone control connected to the neck pickup and the lower control connected to the bridge pickup.
