Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

I've got an Indian build Squier Vintage Modified Tele that is in the same vein as the CV series, and it's a gloriously awesome guitar. I've upgraded the electronics, pickups, and the hardware, and the nut was not cut well from the factory. Now, it's an amazing guitar, that was pretty good except for a setup when I got it bone stock. I played it for a long while completely stock expert for the nut, and lived every minute of it.

The Squier VM series is usually Crafted In Indonesia. I have the Tele Custom II. IMO, it punches well above its MSRP.

The Squier Classic Vibe series is playable and the pickups are decent. (Tonerider, very often.) Upgrades are easy to carry out.

The G&L Tribute series (also Crafted In Indonesia) is excellent. The pickups are American. Some of the hardware benefits from upgrading.

Ultimately, the question is how important to you is the logo on the headstock?

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

I've played the Vintage Modified Tele Custom (HH), the Cabronita Tele, the Jagmaster, the Jaguar, and the 70's Strat. All very nice instruments for the price. I'm not gonna say that they compare to a USA Deluxe whatever, but they can and should compete with anything that Epiphone is putting out. My bassist uses a Vintage Modified Jazz Bass &0's in Natural as well as the 5 string version and said that after an EMG pickup swap (he likes actives basses) they play awesome. Really decent stuff. I would not be opposed to buying an HH Tele Custom.

They may be from Indonesia now, but I submit...

I've got Schaller locking tuners, bone nut, CTS pots, vintage bubble bee cap, SSL-1 neck, Duncan 5/2 bridge, and I have an STL-1b to put in if I get the mood. Also, and the best part IMO, the Callaham bridge. So good! BTW, the body is Indian Cedar, so it smells great.

Ignore the fact that it says Squier on the headstock . The quality of their product today is just really, really , great. Especially the Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified line of guitars . Both lines are giving Fender's MIM Standard Series a run for their money and in the case of the CV series, I dare say the quality is much better .

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

My CV Tele, which I sold to a.forum Bro, was a fantastic player, and put together tight. I only sold it because the skinny neck and small frets aggravated my CTS to the point I was in severe pain.

I have played the CV Tele Custon, and the CV 50s Strat and have been equally impressed. Well worth the coin.

FWIW- these were MIChina versions. No clue if they are made elsewhere these days.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

IMO they are good guitars, for the buck. If there is any brand that I think is over priced it is LTD by ESP.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

Remember when Agile was all the rage? Great guitars for damn near nothing. Then they thought, hmmm everybody loves us so we can charge more. The prices went up and where's Agile now? Sometimes enthusiasm and praise for a guitar is relative to its price point, and a good guitar isn't really as good (or should I say, palatable) when the price goes up.

What you say is true BUT it also had a lot to do with the headstock change (whenever that was).

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

I had a CV50s for a year. It was a great instrument. The neck was the only thing I wasn't too big on, it was comfortable, nice and rounded off but felt small in my hands.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

The Classic Vibe Teles are VERY strong guitars, even for Fender standards, and are only ~$300-$370 new at my local stores. I really really REALLY like the Custom Classic Vibe tele. Looks awesome, and is a tele with a rosewood board (a nice mix-up).

Not to mention the sound and playability.

I've got a vintage modified J bass, and it's a great instrument!

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

When I heard the pickups on the CV teles were tonerider I did a quick google search. If it was true that would mean that they're dangerously close in spec to an MIM tele. Maybe they'll lose out on build quality but I find it quite odd that the squier stuff has better pickups that the MIM stuff. If they are the toneriders they'd have A3 magnets, which is quite rare, even SD doesn't offer A3 pickups, let alone in a $300-something guitar while the MIM teles have ceramic pickups. Could this be a test by fender?

Anyways I found these pages on the topic

I have the Squier VM fretless Jazz Bass. I tried active pickups in it for a while. I soon decided that it had more growl with passive pickups. In my opinion, on the fretless version, uprating the bridge does not improve the tone.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

As others have said if you play one these 'high end' squiers you will understand. Street price they are a fair but cheaper the MSRP and are a fair bit better quality then the bottom mexican fenders. Not sure what my Squier Jaguar retails in the US but it was about 300 euros and I think its a fairly nice guitar, I have also played some Classic Vibes in stores and apart from terrible store setups they sound pretty good and feel better then standard MIM teles not quite in the league of CIJ but they go for well over 1000 second hand now. And here in Australia fenders have never been so cheap in general so I cant complain.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

Yeah, as I said long ago in this thread, my vintage modified tele is a great guitar. Im Not a tele guy but felt I needed one in the arsenal and everytime I spend a significant amount of time with it, I start to think it could really be all I need. All I did was upgrade the pups. When I was shopping for a tele, I was looking at Fenders in the range of $500-700 and I liked the Squier more. Only Fender that I almost went for was the baja cuz of the pups. But I got the Squier and upgraded the neck and bridge pups and added straplocks. The middle pup is the stock duncan designed. Could probably use an upgrade there, but I dont use it that much and when I do its in conjunction to the neck or bridge and it doesnt seem to hold me back. Is it the best tele made? NO. Is it a great guitar at a great price? absolutely..

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

I've had a CV50's tele for 3 years. I Love It! although the early CV's had softer fretwire. There is a ton of wear my MIM fender of the same year does not have. they both get equal play time with the same strings. D'addario epn110's. The only changes i've made are compensated brass saddles and strap locks. recently I polished up the frets and set it up and started playing it more. still holds up against my cray and classic player 50's MIM strats. makes me want a baja tele though. because at some point ill need a refret and that is not cost effective. I may just snag a newer CV neck on ebay or TGP.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

IMO there are a lot of good guitars and value for money in the mid range and even in some beginner guitars, these days.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

I have 2 Squier, a Vintage Modern Jaguar and a Vintage Modern Jazzmaster, bothe are GREAT.
I only had to change the string, set up properly neck relief, intonation and saddles height and they worked like a charm, resonating and full of vibe.
The only real issue was in the Jag, where the pickups were microphonics, I put them in wax with the claws on, problem soved.
Worth every cents (300 euro each, more than a bargain)
