single 12" combo -- need a gig machine

ginormous

Understatmentologist
I'm looking for something that will be manageable at medium volumes,
but sound like it's blowing the doors off when I put an OD pedal to it.

Small to medium venues (bars/restaurants), something I can put in a sedan and roll with.

I don't mind used, if it covers my attitude and sound. I'm not a metalhead, and not a country chicken-picker.
More like bluesy and overdriven, classic rock and soul; warm and clean, not dentist-drill piercing.
I've got an Agile AL-3200 (singlecut double humbucker), and an Ibanez AS-50 (semihollow 335 clone); that's where I'm coming from.
Price point? $500 or better.

Any suggestions?

The Fender of your choice with nice chimey cleans and a Bogner Extasy Blue pedal (it can absolutely nail some classic Marshall tones), and maybe something like a Wylde Overdrive to kick the Bogner in the teeth when you feel like it.

My all purpose combo is a Marshall VS100, it is 60/100 switchable with great built in reverb and overdrive. It is a manageable 1x12 size and has a 12AX7 tube preamp even though it is a solid state amp. I can pop it on top of a 4x12 cab and have a searing Marshall half stack if needed. Bottom line is it is a Marshall and sounds like a Marshall solid state or not. Seeing it is a solid state amp the cleans are also sparkling. I paid $200 for mine and couldn't be happier with it. However, typically I have seen them in the $250 - $300 range.

Tube? Solid State? modeler?

I like my Vox Valvetronix AD50VT. Have gigged a lot with it. Has been reliable.

I nice used Marshall dual channel combo would be nice. The Dual Reverbs, while not my fav, have proven to be good workhorses.

For solid state, it's hard to beat an old Peavey Bandit when it comes to a workhorse.

Matchless Dr Z MAZ 18 or Prescription Jr or East Club 30 spring to mind.

Re: single 12" combo -- need a gig machine

Sorry, did not see your price point. Used Laney or Orange lunch box amp?

Re: single 12" combo -- need a gig machine

I'm not sure how many combo amps use this speaker configuration, but I find two 10" speakers to be infinitely preferable to a single 12" unit. Better spread that doesn't form the highly-directional 'flashlight beam of sound' that a single 12 does, and very little noticeable loss of low end for most purposes. (Plus you could upgrade the 10s to Celestion G10 Greenbacks at some point and you'd be hard pressed to know they weren't 12s).

Tweed Deluxe 5E3 with a Weber 125A 103db speaker is more than loud enough. Creamy tube overdrive. Put a TS-9 in front for that extra kick.. woo hoo.

yeh...a 5e3 or a deluxe reverb with your speaker of choice will give you lots of nice rich sounds.

You did say 500 or better.. lol
Check out Mission Amps (Lew's brother Bruce) if he's still in the biz.

Carvin V3m.

This I have a Belair and a Redline 600 from some years ago and they are nice quality stuff
The V series and the X100b weren't available then but if I had a need now the V3m would be my choice

I really like the Nomad, but the V3m fits so many different genres, and is power scalable to 7w. Its very much a swiss army knife.

Go to Triode USA. If you can solder, and have ever built a plastic car model you can have a killer amp in about 3 hrs or less. But get the tubes and speaker first. Mojo has great cabs. A week or two tops.
Bruce sells (or did) sell complete kits.
